What to expect
When you book live entertainment, you're not just filling a time-slot — you're making a promise to your client and their guests. The Pablo Shine Latin Jazz Band is built to help you keep that promise with confidence. Led by Kingston, NY percussionist and bandleader Pablo Shine and featuring the exceptional vibraphonist Rick Altman, this is a working band with real-world performance experience, professional instincts, and the musical range to serve a wide variety of event contexts — from intimate corporate receptions to outdoor festivals, private galas, restaurant residencies, and cultural celebrations.
What you're actually booking: a room-reader, not just a band.
Pablo Shine has spent years performing live in the Mid-Hudson Valley and beyond, developing the situational awareness that separates a great live act from a merely capable one. He knows when to build energy, when to bring it down, and how to read a room that hasn't decided yet whether it wants to dance or just listen. That instinct — earned through hundreds of live performances — means you're not gambling on an unknown quantity. You're booking a bandleader who manages the energy of your event the way a skilled emcee manages a room: with intention, flexibility, and a steady eye on what the moment needs.
The music itself is the draw.
Latin jazz occupies a uniquely powerful position in live entertainment: it is sophisticated enough to satisfy discerning listeners yet rhythmically irresistible enough to get people out of their seats. The Pablo Shine Latin Jazz Band performs a rich, carefully curated repertoire drawing from mambo, cha-cha-chá, bossa nova, Afro-Cuban jazz, and Latin jazz standards — music with deep cultural roots that translates effortlessly across audiences of different ages, backgrounds, and tastes. Whether your guests are jazz aficionados or simply people who enjoy an elevated live music experience, this band delivers something they'll be talking about long after the event ends.
Central to the band's sound is vibraphonist Rick Altman, whose presence elevates every performance from impressive to unforgettable. The vibraphone is a rare and visually distinctive instrument — elegant, percussive, and unlike anything most audiences see in a live setting. Altman's command of the instrument is total: shimmering melodic lines, rich harmonic voicings, and a natural swing that locks into Shine's percussion with the precision of a long-standing musical partnership. The interplay between Altman and Shine is the band's signature — a conversation between two seasoned players who have learned to listen as deeply as they play. Guests notice it. They lean in. They stay at their tables longer. That's what you want from live entertainment at any event.
Versatile format, professional execution.
The Pablo Shine Latin Jazz Band can be configured to suit your venue and budget. Smaller acoustic setups work beautifully for cocktail hours, restaurant engagements, and upscale private events where conversation and atmosphere are the priority. Larger full-band configurations bring the full rhythmic power and sonic depth needed to anchor a main stage, outdoor event, or festival setting. Either way, the band arrives prepared, professional, and ready to deliver — not to rehearse on your timeline or troubleshoot at your expense.
Setup requirements are straightforward, load-in is organized, and communication leading up to the event is prompt and clear. As a bandleader and working professional, Pablo Shine understands that the experience of booking a band doesn't end at the contract — it extends through every interaction leading up to performance day. You can expect timely responses, accurate advance logistics, and a team that treats your event with the same care they bring to the music.
Who hires the Pablo Shine Latin Jazz Band?
This is the right booking for corporate event planners looking to offer guests a culturally rich, globally appealing live music experience that feels neither predictable nor polarizing. It's an ideal fit for arts organizations, cultural festivals, and community events that want music with substance and heritage rather than background filler. Wedding planners and private event professionals will find in this band a cocktail-hour and reception act that reads as both elegant and celebratory — exactly the right emotional register for milestone moments. Restaurant and hospitality clients gain a recurring draw that gives guests a reason to return.
Latin jazz is proven. The vibraphone is distinctive. Pablo Shine is the kind of bandleader who makes your job easier — because when the music is this good, the event takes care of itself.

About
I’ve been playing congas since my early teens in Puerto Rico. One afternoon at my grandmother’s Gabriela uncle-William showed me some rudiments and the basic tumbao pattern, the lifeblood of Salsa and Latin Jazz. That was my initiation in conga playing.
There is no lack of African base music in the Island, so I learned a great deal from watching some of the best percussionist in the Salsa bands. In 1983 I came to SUNY New Paltz to finish my degree in Fine arts and that took priority, completing my BFA and MFA. In the mid 90’s I was re- introduced to conga playing by my teacher and dear friend Nadir Velez, a master of Folkloric Afro-Caribbean percussion. I have played with different local bands including Passero, The Latin Jazz Express, and NuBossa. Over six years ago, together with Rick Altman on Vibes and Michael Colletti on upright bass, I founded my own band Pablo Shine Latin Jazz Band (formerly Sabor). We play Latin Jazz Standards as well as originals. We play live, locally here in the Hudson Valley and are available for private events.

### Performance Requirements & Technical Rider
#### For Event Planners, Venue Managers & Production Staff
---
The Pablo Shine Latin Jazz Band has been performing professionally throughout the Hudson Valley, New York City metro area, and beyond for decades. In that time we have played practically every kind of venue imaginable — intimate jazz rooms, rooftop terraces, outdoor festival stages with full production crews, corporate ballrooms, concert halls, arts centers, and everything in between. That experience means we arrive at every engagement knowing what works, what doesn't, and how to solve problems before they become day-of headaches.
We are professionals in every sense. Our advance communication is prompt and organized. We arrive when we say we will. We set up without drama, play the show, and leave the venue in the condition we found it. We know that for event planners and venue managers, the band is one piece of a complicated puzzle — and we take seriously our responsibility to be the piece that causes no friction.
This document outlines our standard technical requirements for staging, sound, lighting, and hospitality. Think of it as a starting point for conversation, not a non-negotiable demand sheet. We will always communicate early if a requirement can't be met so we can find a workable alternative together.

## Band Configuration & Format Options
The Pablo Shine Latin Jazz Band is available in multiple configurations sized to fit the scale, budget, and character of your event. Band size, instrumentation, and production footprint are determined collaboratively at the time of booking.
**Intimate / Acoustic Format**
A smaller ensemble — typically three to four pieces built around Pablo Shine on percussion and Rick Altman on vibraphone — suited for cocktail hours, private dinners, restaurant residencies, gallery openings, and smaller indoor venues where atmosphere is the priority. Sound requirements are minimal and flexible. The natural acoustic presence of the vibraphone and hand percussion carries beautifully in intimate spaces, and we can often perform with little or no amplification depending on the room.
**Standard Live Band Format**
A mid-size ensemble suited for corporate events, private parties, arts venue bookings, and indoor event spaces with a dedicated stage. This configuration adds additional voices — typically piano or keys, bass, and horn — expanding the band's dynamic range and repertoire depth. A modest PA and monitor system is standard for this format.
**Full Production Format**
An expanded ensemble built for festivals, large outdoor events, and main-stage bookings. In this configuration, a full PA system and backline can be provided — through the band's own production relationships or in coordination with your in-house production team. We have worked with professional sound engineers and production crews throughout the region and beyond.
Set length, number of sets, and break schedule are confirmed in writing at booking. Standard formats include one 90-minute set, two 45-minute sets, or three 30-minute sets, though we will work within whatever structure your event requires.

## Sound Requirements
### Smaller & Intimate Venues
Sound requirements at smaller venues are evaluated case by case in coordination with venue management during the advance. In acoustically favorable rooms, the natural resonance of the instruments often carries without reinforcement. Where amplification is needed, a modest house PA or small monitor system is sufficient. We will assess honestly and communicate our needs well in advance — a simple conversation during the advance resolves the vast majority of sound-related issues before the day of the event.
### Larger Venues & Outdoor Events
For larger venues, festivals, and outdoor performances, a full PA system and backline can be provided. We maintain relationships with production companies and sound professionals throughout the Hudson Valley and NYC metro and can recommend trusted vendors if your event does not have an existing production partner. A complete input list and stage plot will be provided upon booking confirmation.
**Standard PA requirements for larger productions:**
- Main PA appropriate for venue capacity and outdoor throw distance
- Dedicated monitor mix — floor wedges preferred; IEM capability a plus
- Subwoofer support for bass and low-end percussion frequencies
- Front-of-house engineer with live jazz or Latin music experience preferred
- Minimum 60–90 minutes uninterrupted soundcheck prior to doors; two hours preferred for larger configurations
---
## Stage Requirements
The percussion-forward nature of this band places specific demands on stage setup that differ from a typical jazz combo. Please review carefully when assessing your venue.
**Dimensions:**
- Intimate format: minimum 12' wide × 10' deep
- Standard format: minimum 16' wide × 12' deep
- Full production format: minimum 20' wide × 16' deep, with additional wing space for backline
**Surface & Stability:**
A level, stable, non-raked stage surface is essential. Conga drums, timbales, and hand percussion require solid footing. On uneven, raked, or flexible surfaces, stands shift and instruments move, creating both performance and safety issues. If you have questions about your stage surface, please raise them during the advance.
**Outdoor Coverage:**
For all outdoor performances, the stage must be fully covered by a permanent structure, tent, or production canopy. Direct sun damages the vibraphone's resonators and bars. Rain, even light rain, renders electronic equipment dangerous and can permanently damage acoustic instruments. No outdoor performance will proceed without adequate overhead coverage in place before load-in.
**Power:**
- Minimum two dedicated 20-amp circuits at stage level for standard format
- Larger productions require additional power drops — specifications provided with the advance production package
- All circuits must be properly grounded; shared circuits with catering, lighting, or HVAC are not acceptable
**Load-In Access:**
The vibraphone requires careful transport and setup. Clear, unobstructed load-in access to the stage is required, including elevator or ground-level access where stairs are the only alternative. Please communicate any load-in challenges — narrow doorways, gravel paths, or long distances from parking to stage — during the advance.
---
## Lighting
We do not require elaborate theatrical lighting design. What we ask is that stage lighting be functional, flattering, and safe.
**Baseline requirements:**
- A consistent stage wash in warm tones — amber, warm white, or gold — is strongly preferred. Cool or blue-dominant lighting works against the visual and emotional character of Latin jazz.
- Front-of-stage lighting must be sufficient for musicians to read charts. No performer should be working in their own shadow.
- No strobes, rapid-cycling color effects, or aggressive moving light programming during performance. Percussion requires stable visual conditions.
**For larger productions:** A simple three-point lighting setup — key, fill, and backlight — significantly elevates the visual presentation and is strongly recommended. We are happy to discuss looks and cue structure with your lighting director in advance.
---
## Hospitality & Green Room
- A private or semi-private green room or holding area for band members during non-performance time is required for all engagements.
- Parking for a minimum of two to three vehicles must be provided or arranged. Band members travel from Kingston and the broader Hudson Valley region.
- Water, non-alcoholic beverages, and light snacks available at stage level and in the green room throughout the call. Hot food or a per-person meal buyout is expected for calls more than three hours before performance or events running longer than three hours total.
- For multi-set engagements, a designated break space away from the main event floor allows musicians to reset between sets.
---
## Advance & Day-of Communication
Pablo Shine manages all booking and production advance personally — one consistent point of contact from initial inquiry through the final set. Upon booking confirmation and receipt of deposit you will receive:
- Countersigned contract and deposit confirmation
- Stage plot and input list for all sound-reinforced performances
- Confirmed set length, number of sets, and break schedule in writing
- Load-in, soundcheck, and performance time agreement
- Day-of emergency contact number for Pablo directly
We ask that your organization designate a single production or event contact for advance communication. Direct, one-to-one communication on both sides prevents the small misunderstandings that create large day-of problems.
---
## A Note on Professional Flexibility
The Pablo Shine Latin Jazz Band has performed in practically every condition imaginable over decades of professional work in this region and beyond. We have adapted to compressed timelines, unusual stage configurations, noise ordinances, and last-minute changes — without complaint, because the show and the event planner who trusted us always come first.
What we ask in return is transparency. If your venue has unusual constraints — a small stage, limited power, a tight timeline, or a production budget that can't accommodate everything on this rider — tell us early. We will nearly always find a workable solution. What we cannot fix is a surprise we learn about at load-in.
Bring us your questions and constraints before the event. We will give you honest answers, workable solutions, and a performance that makes every logistical conversation worthwhile. That is the professional standard we hold to, on every booking.
