Oscar received the 2025 New Mexico Entertainment Award in the Jazz/Blues category and was named a finalist in the 2025 Telluride Blues Challenge at the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival. He is also a 2023 New Mexico Music Award winner for Singer/Songwriter. His continued recognition includes two nominations in the 2026 New Mexico Music Awards and a 2026 New Mexico Entertainment Award nomination in the Jazz/Blues category.

His journey to becoming a performing songwriter began long before those honors.

Born in New York City and raised from the age of three in Orange County, New York, Oscar began playing guitar at nine. By twelve, he was already performing publicly, entering a local county fair competition. The following year, he won a talent show at his school in Goshen, New York.

After high school, Oscar attended the State University of New York at Cortland, where he studied music theory with a concentration in performance. Surrounded by musicians whose abilities seemed far beyond his own, he began doubting whether he had the talent to build a life in music. Eventually, he changed his major to computer science, put down the guitar, and tried to leave his musical ambitions behind.

They didn't stay behind for long.

Several years later, living in Boston, Oscar the musician resurfaced—this time as a street performer.

He began busking throughout Boston, performing in markets, public spaces, and on Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority subway platforms. Those years became an unexpected but invaluable education in live performance. With no stage lighting, no captive audience, and no guarantee anyone would stop to listen, Oscar learned how to connect quickly and honestly with complete strangers.

Performing in a city filled with exceptional young musicians, including students from Berklee College of Music, also forced him to confront the doubts that had once caused him to walk away from music. The response from listeners gradually taught him something his earlier schooling had not: musical connection could not be measured only by technical perfection.

People stopped. They listened. They responded.

His work as a subway performer eventually attracted the attention of a reporter, and Oscar was included in a Boston Globe story about local subway musicians.

In 1990, after the birth of his first daughter, Oscar and his family left Boston and moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. New Mexico would become both home and the place where he continued developing his identity as a performer, songwriter, and guitarist.

Over the years, Oscar has performed in listening rooms, theaters, festivals, restaurants, community events, private gatherings, arts festivals, and concert series throughout the Southwest and beyond. Through those experiences, his focus gradually shifted from simply playing songs to creating genuine connection with an audience.

Today, that connection is at the center of everything he does.

Oscar's performances combine original songs, expressive acoustic guitar, soulful vocals, storytelling, and humor. His delta-style fingerpicking provides much of the rhythmic foundation of his sound, with an independent bass pulse underneath melodic guitar lines that often give a solo performance the movement and fullness of something much larger.

His songwriting draws inspiration from his rural New York upbringing, his family's deep roots in Georgia and Alabama, relationships, aging, love, mistakes, perseverance, Southern culture, and the small moments that reveal something larger about being human.
