Our First CD Release in 2019

Overview

New Leaf is Kira Jewett on fiddle and Jim Bunting on guitar, vocals and bouzouki, usually with another melody player to round it out. Together they are a high-energy, technically accomplished trio with ties to some of the greats of the Irish tradition. They get little kids dancing to jigs and reels and their parents ordering another beer for a sing-a-long. They've been called “Pure Drop” by the late great Boston concert promoter Brian O’Donovan and were highly acclaimed guests at the Fleadh Nua traditional music festival in Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland in 2023. New Leaf regularly plays weddings (ceremony, cocktail hour or both), private parties, festivals and events, and concert series.

Felt like I was at a pub in Ireland

New Leaf Irish Band played for a very special birthday reception and their music was exceptional! The guests raved about their performance of pure Celtic music, many reminiscing about the pubs they visited while in Ireland! They brought pure joy to an already joyous occasion and I highly recommend them.

Great sound! A pleasure to work with.

Hired New Leaf for a St- Patrick's-themed birthday party at a restaurant. They were perfect - a combination of fun, toe-tapping Irish music while not so loud that we could not hold conversations. I explained to them that we needed to be respectful of other patrons in the restaurant (a Mexican restaurant!), and they were. The manager really enjoyed having them there and told me a couple of times that they could play louder (I had told them to leave the amp in the car), but we thought it was a perfect balance for our party. They were also responsive to my messages, and easy and pleasant to plan and work with. I would absolutely hire them again, and would highly reommend them.

What to expect

You'd see the three (or sometimes one or two) of us tearing into a high-energy set of reels, exchanging knowing glances as we throw in fun ornaments, while the audience taps their feet and sometimes spontaneously gets up to dance. You'd hear some slower waltzes and airs, especially for more solemn events, when our virtuosity can shine as we honor someone special. You'd find folks bopping and singing along to the chorus of traditional Irish pub songs or listening carefully to a beautifully crafted ballad.

About

New Leaf is Kira Jewett on fiddle, and Jim Bunting on guitar, vocals and bouzouki, usually with a third melody player steeped in the Irish tradition. Together they play tunes with tight, driving rhythm, interspersed with Jim's unique take on Ireland's song repertoire.

Kira Jewett started playing classically when she was just three years old, but fell in love with the music of Ireland in her 20s and studied extensively with the virtuoso fiddler Brian Conway. She is the 2003 All-Ireland fiddle Slow Airs Champion. Singer and rhythm player Jim Bunting is an avid local session player who brings a sensitive touch and driving rhythm to the band.

New Leaf brings joy and tradition to weddings, parties, pubs, Irish-American clubs and music festivals. In 2023 we were invited guests at the Fleadh Nua in Ennis, Co. Clare. We can be found performing throughout southern New England.

Additional booking notes

We are quite flexible! Normally we bring our own sound system - two Bose L1 Compacts which have fantastic sound and are very portable and easy to set up. We'll need 3 chairs or stools and a source of electricity. If it's OK with you, we often set up a table for CD sales, but can skip this for private parties.
