Thomas Donley is a New York City based photographer... he is an adventurer/explorer of culture(s), near and far, it runs in his blood. From covering events from Madison Square Garden to the Shuar tribe in the Ecuadorian jungle; from film sets in Vancouver, B.C. to Charleston, South Carolina; from theaters to street performers to wild underground events in NYC. Donley has also been hired to cover dozens of private events every year, for many years.
For over 20 years, he has been shooting. Donley freelances for variety of publications, including The New York Times, Time Out NY, Life Magazine, among others. He has exhibited in numerous shows at SOHO Photo Gallery, in NY; won awards for his concert photography; was invited to exhibit work from Oregon to Vieques, Puerto Rico; and has held exhibitions in his own Chelsea, NYC space between 2001 and 2004.
Early in his career, Thomas Donley was ensconced within the indie film world of production & distribution, working on films with such veteran filmmakers as Brian DePalma and Oliver Stone. He was the in-house photographer for Lightstone Productions, the creative home of filmmaker, Demian Lichtenstein. Later on, Mr. Lichtenstein incorporated Donley into the set of his film, 3000 Miles to Graceland, to work on a special photographic project. The project included scene and behind-the-scene photographs of Kevin Costner, Kurt Russell, Courteney Cox and Christian Slater (among many others). Most recently, he was production photographer for the documentary, Beautiful People, a documentary film about Irish seisiuns music on the lower east side of Manhattan, NYC. Also within his cinematic experience, Donley worked at United Artists Classics, the pioneering indie film distributor (The Last Waltz, Diva, Entre Nous, The Grey Fox, Cutter’s Way, etc). Later on, he spent a stint as a production manager at McGraw-Hill's magazine division, including Business Week.
Thomas has a B.A. in film and theater from Sarah Lawrence College, and has been a Full Member of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) since 2002. He has been serving on the Board of the New York Chapter of ASMP since 2009.
