In 2020, Virginia police officer Mervin Mayo became a viral sensation when his heartfelt rendition of Marvin Sapp’s “The Best in Me” racked up over a million Facebook views, landed him a CNN feature, and a record deal with TYSCOT RECORDS.
Mayo, who grew up in Richmond’s tough Creighton Court housing projects, was inspired by a local officer, Curtis Simmons, to become a cop himself. After joining the force in 2005, he worked the streets before moving into school resource work to help at-risk youth — a mission close to his heart.
Music has always been his passion. From singing in church to performing in an R&B group and later founding the gospel group CHANGED, Mayo honed a style that blends old-school R&B with gospel soul. His TYSCOT debut, God Did It, has earned over 44 million streams and 46 million Tik Tok views, with fan favorites like “In This Place,” “I’m Healing,” and the title track.
Now a leading voice in gospel music, Mayo is set to release his sophomore album in 2025, led by the new single, “The Air I Breathe.” Mervin still resides in Richmond and is a happily married man of God and father of 3.
