About
Violinist May Tang’s early studies began at the Colburn School of Performing Arts which inspired her to pursue her lifelong work as a musician. As a former member of the Calista String Quartet, a fellowship ensemble at the Banff Center
for Arts and Creativity, she mentored with the Parker, Jack and Eybler String Quartets as well as the Gryphon Piano Trio. At Banff, her quartet performed regularly as the Young Artist Ensemble in Residence at the Bentley Chamber Music Studio Series culminating in a showcased performance at the famed Rolston Hall.
May has attended festivals including Center Stage Strings, Sounding Point Academy, Stringwood, and LyricaFest and as a member of the Arbor Quartet was invited to participate in a quartet residency at the Apple Hill Chamber Music Festival. There, the quartet coached extensively with Nina Lee of the Brentano String Quartet as well as members of the Apple Hill String Quartet. As a soloist, Ms. Tang has worked with violinists Andrew Jennings, Frank Almond, Stefan Jackiw, Laura Bossert, and Grigory Kalinovsky.
May graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Music degree from the University of Michigan as a student of David Halen, concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony and with a double Master’s degree in violin and chamber music working with soloist Fabiola Kim, former teaching assistant to pedagogue Robert Lipsett. At the university, her string quartet auditioned for the prestigious Collage Concert, and was honored to be chosen to represent the School of Music’s chamber music department for an audience of over 3,500 at the Hill Auditorium.
May is committed to the lifelong exploration of music, collaborating with her mentors and colleagues. After recently returning to Los Angeles, she looks forward to navigating the artistic landscape of her childhood.
