Overview

Each of the musicians in Masala Jazz, a Pioneer Valley-based instrumental group, has a unique musical approach to their fusion of contemporary jazz, funk, and blues. SiriNam Khalsa, the band's leader and originator, wanted Masala to reflect family and the enjoyment of playing music. SiriNam’s decades of guitar playing was described in a Daily Hampshire Gazette Arts and Entertainment article as “a clean and melodic sound influenced by musicians such as Pat Matheny and Larry Carlton.” Masala Jazz plays at local venues and private events.

Masala Jazz at The Black Sheep

Sirinam's guitar playing is the best. As a child of the 60's and 70's I am moved by how good he is
We love having him and Masala Jazz play at the Black Sheep

Masala Jazz

Thanks Nick. We appreciate your support for providing a space for weekend jazz at the Black Sheep. It's always a great environment to play in and the Amherst community loves it as well! Us "children" of the 60's and 70's have to stick together!

About

MASALA is a terminology used in South Asian cuisine to describe a mixture of wonderful spices. Not unlike the mixture of the many spices in Indian cooking, Masala, a Leverett-based instrumental jazz group, is a mixture of many musicians and a fusion of musical expressions with a foundation in jazz and blues. SiriNam’s three decades of guitar playing was described in a Daily Hampshire Gazette Arts and Entertainment article as “a clean and melodic sound influenced by musicians such as Pat Matheny and Larry Carlton.” Depending on the venue you may hear the basic Masala Jazz trio of SiriNam, world-renowned percussionist, Michel Moushabeck, and bassist Noah Oltman. On occasion, SiriNam’s percussionist brother from NYC, Peter Vita will join them as well as his son Dharam Bir on keyboard.
A sample eclectic song list can include: Summertime, Cantaloup Island, So What, Witchatw Lineman, Girl from Ipanema, and Tenor Madness.
