Mariachi Estrella has its roots deep in the History of Austin. The band was Formed in 1968 by Billy Mendoza a native of Austin, TX and enjoyed many years of success throughout the 70’s and early 80’s. Upon the retirement of Mr. Mendoza in 1981, the rights were passed along to his son-in-law at the time Rupert Ortiz, also a native of Austin. Mr. Ortiz was employed as a Peace Offer with the Austin Police Department when taking over the group in 1981 and retired from APD shortly after to pursue a full time music career with Mariachi Estrella. Rupert experienced continued success with Mariachi Estrella through the 80’s and 90’s with accolades such as Performance at the White House during the Ronald Reagan Presidency, Featured Artist of the Austin Acoustical Festival, and the first Mariachi Band to have a calendar day dubbed “Mariachi Estrella Day” by then Mayor of the City of Austin Gus Garcia. After his 20 year reign with Mariachi Estrella, Rupert Ortiz retired in 2003 handing the rights over to his guitar player and flamboyant performer Jorge A. Torres. Mr. Torres continued the legacy of Mariachi Estrella for a short but successful period until retiring in 2006. Then, reluctant to pass the reigns on to the next legacy of this Iconic Band of Austin, Jorge finally sold the rights to fellow musician Gabriel R. Vasquez who had launched his musical career with 2nd generation Mariachi Estrella in 1997, and remains the owner to present day. He formed 4th generation Mariachi Estrella with new members in the fall of 2008, and continues the tradition of the band being Austin's Oldest and Most Prominent Mariachi in the "Live Music Capitol of the World"!
