From the time I was a kid, I worshiped divas and gay icons with the kind of devotion usually reserved for saints, but my obsession with Liza didn’t truly begin until I was a young child. That’s when my mom brought home a battered VHS copy of Stepping Out. The moment Liza appeared on screen. She was glorious, magnetic, utterly genuine—something in me shifted. Reality tilted slightly, and I knew I’d never see the world the same way again.
Liza wasn’t just performing, she was telling a story, completely immersed in her character, pulsing with honesty and heart. Even then, I recognized a kind of magic in that. And now, looking back, I realize those very qualities—generosity, truth, and that unmistakable ‘PIZZAZZ’—shaped my own aspirations as a performer. I didn’t just want to watch her. I wanted to feel what she felt, jazz hands included.
