Except a high energy hip-hop performance with captivating honesty and human connection to the audience. Kwesi is an entertainer that composes, records, mixes and masters all of the accompanying beats, instrumental and sounds that plays with his set. As an exceptional dancer and rhythm-junkie, his charisma is contagious and effortlessly makes it easy for audiences to get comfortable, loosen up and enjoy the groove of funk and contemporary bay area hip-hop.
Kwesi Young is producer/songwriter and performing artist producing in San Jose, Ca. Kwesi comes from a family of musicians with roots in Accra Ghana. After spending the first 2 years of his life in Ghana, he returned to Las Vegas, Nevada. Kwesi’s mother, a singer/songwriter, used songwriting as an inspired method to teach him to speak english. At the age of 5, she bought him a keyboard. Unable to afford lessons, young Kwesi taught himself to play with tips from his uncle, a musician and recording engineer.
At age 10, Kwesi witnessed a family friend use an MPC 2000 to sample African guitar riffs. He knew in that moment music was what he would do for the rest of his life. In 1998, his mother moved them to San Jose. Friendless and without access to a studio, Kwesi found refuge in skate culture. It was in this new world that he discovered new ways to produce music, mainly the software based production program Fruity Loops 3. During this era, artists like Blackalicious, Deltron 3030, Heiro, Kool Keith, Mountain Brothers, E-40, Keak Da Sneak, The Roots and DJ Premier formed the foundation of his future musical expression.
Kwesi’s musical experience ranges from playing in African praise and worship teams to reggae and rock bands. His sound is heavily percussive with west African rudiments tucked under pulsating ghost rhythms. Kwesi remains dedicated to pushing artistic boundaries, fusing Buru beat with Hyphy influenced bay area swing and spirit-provoking chord progressions. Guided by programs that support black youth, Kwesi’s lyrical composition and songwriting are always embedded with a socially aware subtext that is now more relevant than ever.
Kwesi is has now dropped his first solo project “Digital Age 2.0” and will be releasing his debut album Fall of 2016.
