Katherine Rhoda
Overview
Maine musician Katherine Rhoda loves to explore the whimsical world of vintage fretless zithers. She plays several, including Marxophone, violin-guitar, Phonoharp No. 1, & harpeleik, as well as the accordion, Lithuanian kanklės (from the land of her mother's people), & more. She has a superb and expressive voice, & a gift for crafting memorable original music, which she blends with traditional material & off-the-beaten-path covers. Far more than just a novelty act, Katherine has a vibrant & engaging presence on stage. Unafraid to air the challenges of the human predicament, she radiates a passionate personal optimism & brings a reflective & inclusive sensibility to her work.

What to expect
Looking for something different? With voice, Marxophone and violin-guitar (play-by-number American fretless zithers sold door to door in the early 1900s), harpeleik, accordion, Lithuanian kanklės (from the land of my mother’s people), and more, I do a blend of originals, traditional music, and off-the-beaten-path covers.
In addition to concerts, I offer historical presentations about fretless zithers.
As a hammered dulcimer player, I have played at a number of weddings. It would be a pleasure and a privilege to do so again!
About
Steeped in community and church music, I grew up in small town Milo, Maine, where I recall earnestly trying to play my Great-Aunt-Lydia’s piano as a very young girl, until my family got me my own ($1 at a Lion’s Club auction – no other bids!). I took piano lessons from first grade onward, taught myself to play the guitar my mother got me with S&H Green Stamps, and sang at every opportunity.
Since then my musical adventures have included:
- studying at Oberlin College
- busking in the Paris subway and elsewhere
- recording film music
- Boston’s Lithuanian Ethnographic Ensemble Sodauto
- joining the People’s Music Network
- performing (Caffè Lena; Peoples Voice Café, New England Folk Festival, and more)
- being a folk/world music DJ (WOBC-FM and WMPG-FM)
- leading musical activities in nursing homes
- serving as a church musician
- recording two CDs
- marrying a Brit with a stupendous bass voice who leads interfaith chant
My true love David Wallace-Lawrence and I live in Hiram, Maine, and spend part of each year in the north of England.

Additional booking notes
If the room does not allow for unamplified acoustic music, I use two mics on articulated stands. I can provide my own sound system if that would be helpful.
I prefer to have access to the hall at least an hour and a half in advance to allow for unpacking, tuning, and set-up of multiple instruments.
