Fiddling Thomsons

Why book Fiddling Thomsons?

We are an award winning father and son duo performing lively family friendly music on fiddle, accordion, banjo, celtic flute, piano, tin whistle, canadian wooden spoons, jaw harp, and other instruments. We are happy to add additional band members when needed to create a larger ensemble.

Our music ranges from Irish, Scottish, Bluegrass, Swedish, Gypsy, French, Mexican, to other ethnic styles. We play for contra and barn dances along with a caller, do public concerts, and provide background music and ambience for business functions. We also offer educational workshops and demonstrations.

Overview

We are energetic, friendly, and happy to discuss the nature of the music we play and the various instruments to inquisitive audience members. We are flexible and can adapt to the needs of specific performance situations whether they be structured formally as in a wedding ceremony, or informal, as in providing music for a back yard barbecue. For concerts we prepare a list of performance pieces in advance so that the show progresses smoothly in an entertaining fashion.

It is possible for us to add additional band members when necessary to fill out the sound and appearance of our show. We have long term working relationships with other experienced musicians who can provide support for the type of music that we perform.

Additional Booking Notes

We can supply our own PA system if amplification is necessary. We are happy to perform with no amplification. We are comfortable both with on-stage performances to large audiences, as well as providing back ground acoustic music for ambience at business or themed functions.

Set List

We have a large repertoire of performance pieces which includes several styles of music. We enjoy presenting a wide selection of various ethnic styles of tunes on many different instruments. Most of our music consists of instrumental pieces associated with folk dances from around the world.

However we are experienced in presenting music with a particular theme. For example, we could perform an entire concert set consisting of only celtic tunes. We've done this for St. Patrick's day themed events. Alternately we could perform an entire set of cajun and french tunes, which we've done for mardigras or cajun themed events.

Our repertoire consists of these variations:
polkas, two steps, hambo, walking tunes, jigs, reels, slip jigs, slides, hoedowns, marches, hornpipes, waltzes, songs, and more,

We can perform pieces from these ethnic origins: American, Scottish, Irish, English, Swedish, Mexican, Romanian, Hungarian, French, Canadian, cajun, zydeco, and others.

Influences & Inspiration

My son and I have been performing together on stage since he was 5 years old. He is now 16. Our music is shaped by the many different types of bands that I've been a member of, as "Captain Fiddle," during my career: celtic, gypsy jazz, country rock, blues, barn dance, bluegrass, cajun and zydeco, international folk dance, etc. As my son has grown up he has been included as a working member of many of these bands.

We both have classical music training as well, and come from a family with musical performance experience stretching back for several generations.
