Josh "J-Skins" Barry
Overview
I’m an Orange County-based drummer with 19 years of live performance experience. Much of my career has been spent serving at my home church, where I continue to play, and I have also provided drumming services for other churches and ministry events.
Outside of church, I’ve worked with bands and artists including Devious Droogs, Not Yet Attained, White Noise Revival, Freedom Heart, Donny Walker, Shelley Kemp & Called to Hope, and The Convicted.
My experience has taught me to adapt to different venues, control dynamics, support other musicians, and serve the song with a dependable groove.

Josh is punctual, communicative, easy going, friendly, and a team player. He plays drums in the pocket, drives the train nice and steady, and adds flair when appropriate. You'll be glad to have him play in your band.

What to expect
You can expect to work with a dependable, team-oriented drummer who values musicality over showmanship. I listen carefully, support the other musicians, and adjust my playing to fit the venue, the style of music, and the overall atmosphere of the event.
I bring a professional attitude, a servant’s heart, and a willingness to collaborate. I’m open to direction, respectful of others’ ideas, and committed to helping the entire group sound its best.
I’m deeply passionate about drumming and love creating grooves that connect with an audience—whether that means inspiring people to dance, clap, sing, celebrate, or simply engage with the music.
Above all, I am a follower of Jesus Christ. In worship and ministry settings, I strive to remain sensitive to the Spirit of God, serve the congregation, and glorify Him through my musicianship.
About
I’m a drum set player with 19 years of live performance experience, along with studio recording experience that I’m continuing to build. I also play cajón for acoustic and lower-volume settings.
While I’m primarily self-taught, I have completed college percussion courses and continue developing my skills through Adam Zalewski’s Complete Worship Drummer program.
Much of my growth has come through years of coaching, mentoring, and performing in church environments. That experience has taught me how to listen, adapt to the venue, support the other musicians, and serve the song rather than overplay.
Whether the setting calls for energetic full-band drumming or a more controlled, understated approach, my goal is to play with preparation, professionalism, and musical sensitivity.

Influences and inspiration
My two biggest drumming influences are Marvin McQuitty and Travis Barker. I’m especially inspired by McQuitty’s groove, musicality, and feel, along with Barker’s energy, creativity, and unmistakable style.
Other drummers who have influenced and inspired me include Neil Peart, Chad Smith, Jon Wysocki, John Otto, Chad Sexton, Dan Needham, Tony Royster Jr., Nate Smith, Steve Jordan, and Dennis Chambers—and the list continues to grow.
Setup requirements
I have my own drums, cymbals, hardware, and most obviously -- my own drumsticks. I do not require any equipment in this sense.
I will need at least 15 minutes or so to set my kit up before a gig or session.
I will likely require mics for my kit, depending on the situation.
