I’ve played wonderful gigs supported by the best, but a local promoter’s words hurt most. Without hearing me, they called me “just another old white guy with a guitar.” It stung because I’m so much more.
Every time I’m on stage, I give from my heart and make an emotional connection. People either love me or trash me; I don't paint life as all roses and gold. We all carry demons; I address every hurt and scorn every demon. It's not my style to "tip through the tulips."
Incidentally, at the end of that workshop, that promoter finally heard me play. As a result, I ended up playing the biggest festival on the Island. I am way more than just a guy with a guitar.
