Overview
Grace Fae and The Grandbirds is a vintage jazz band based in Los Angeles, specializing in swinging tunes from the 1920s to the 1940s. The Grandbirds can perform primarily 1920s tunes for a Gatsby party, 1940s for a WW2 themed event, mid-tempo big band classics specifically tailored to swing dancers, and have even created an entire show of classic vintage love tunes, customized for vintage- themed weddings and engagement parties. What to expect
We arrive early to our call time in which group size you choose- a quintet is ideal- with all of our instruments, microphones, cables and music, and can provide speakers & a sound system if necessary for an extra fee.
We come in classy vintage attire, the band members in all black with vintage hats and jackets, and Grace in a colorful vintage inspired gown or dress. We perform sets of 45- 60 minutes, with 15 minute breaks, and can perform up to about 4 hours total.
We customize the set list and content to the client’s needs and can take some special song requests! We have sets of relaxing jazz music, upbeat swing dance tunes, faster tempo 1920s dance music, romantic vintage wedding songs, or a whole holiday show.
We are kind and professional and friendly with the audience and clients. It’s a warm family friendly band that will make you feel like you’ve been transported back in time to the golden age of Hollywood big band jazz. And we can pick fun and more sexy danceable tunes as the night goes on!
About
Grace Fae has been singing the American Songbook since she was a kid, growing up on a steady stream of old Hollywood movie musicals and original Broadway cast recordings. She started voice lessons at the Hartford Conservatory in Connecticut at age 11, and graduated from Yale with honors and an English/Theater degree, singing opera and musical theater and studying dance and acting the whole time.
After college, Grace moved to New Orleans, where she paid her rent by singing jazz and opera in Jackson Square for tips, eventually performing each weekend in a local NOLA restaurant. She then moved to Northern California, singing with many groups, including a big band, a belly dance band, Western Swing band Cousin Cricket, and her own jazz ensemble, Savoy Blonde. Grace released an original jazz/folk album From the Apple in 2012. She moved to LA in 2016, and sang with the Satin Dollz for seven years, as well as Got that Swing! in Orange County & the Bobby Barron Band. Grace founded The Grandbirds in LA in 2018 to specialize in vintage jazz from the 1920s to the 1940s.
The Grandbirds have performed at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel, Urban Press Winery in Burbank, the Barkley in South Pasadena, dance studios for swing dancers, and at private events and holiday parties. Check out our social media for upcoming shows!
Additional booking notes
We need an area or stage to set up, ideally a flat area with enough room for each band member including the drum kit. We require a sound system with speakers and a pa with multiple channels and monitors, or access to power to plug in our own amps and sound system. Basic lighting so our faces and music can be seen. We can also offer our own lighting package with intimate theatrical lighting in addition to a sound system for an extra fee!
We also require access to a restroom, bottled water, possible food & drinks depending on the length of the gig, and ideally a dressing room or green room for the band. Thank you so much! Happy to discuss all of these details at length, and we are flexible.
