Gitesha Jazz Diva Band
Overview
Gitesha's Diva Jazz band sings American Jazz standards, Latin in boogaloo fashion, as well as Brazilian, Soul, RnB, and popular tunes from the 30s to the early 20s she interprets into the jazz idiom.
Gitesha is known for her ability to interpret standards, 60-70's pop, and originals with emotional honesty and inventive phrasing. Her style blends the intimacy of classic torch singers with the freedom of avant-garde improvision. She often scats, bending melody lines and fusing lyrics with spoken word. Gitesha is also a published/performing poet, drummer/percussionist. Her work draws on her Nuyorican roots, jazz rhythms, personal mythology as well as her political awareness.

What to expect
Music that is grounded in jazz, but it's not bound by it. Listeners hear the lineage - Billie, Abbey, Sarah - but they also hear Gitesha and an approach of a unique alchemy. The music is never surface-level. It reaches into spirit, memory, sensuality, and struggle. Not afraid to make a ballad hurt or a groove heal. There's intelligence in her phrasing, risk in her scatting, and generosity in her delivery. She is also a drummer and percussionist, who sometimes even sings and drums at the same time. Even if the notes are familiar, the interpretation never is. Audiences feel like they've touched something both ancient and urgently present. They leave changed. Maybe softer, maybe braver, maybe just more in touch with beauty. That's the mark of a real artist. Not just perform, but transform. Gitesha works with a close-knit ensemble of deeply skilled, soulful artists and collaborators across jazz in duos, trios and quartets, and in poetry, spoken word and performance.
