Funk Jazz Formation plays classic and modern funk, soul and jazz combined into a sound somewhere between The Crusaders, John Scofield and Steely Dan. Based in Portland, groove-jazz group Funk Jazz Formation performs as a quartet, quintet, or a sextet depending on the situation. The quintet and sextets feature tenor sax and/or trombone for a mix of soul and jazz reminiscent of The Crusaders and other classic multi-horn combos. Founded and led by Jayson Tipp, keyboard player and leader of the Top 50 Smooth Jazz group Under The Lake, Funk Jazz Formation performs both classic and modern jazz covers as well as popular original compositions.

Funk Jazz Formation (FJF) is the Portland-based group founded by keyboard player Jayson Tipp as an off-shoot of the international recording group, Under The Lake ((link hidden)). FJF delivers a sound Jayson refers to as "jazz, groove and attitude". The line-up includes Tipp and top instrumentalists from the Portland area including Kenny Franklin on bass, Adam Carlson on drums, and Jack Radsliff on guitar adding horn players David Evans (sax) and John Moak (trombone) when appropriate. The two horn line-up keep the soul jazz sound made famous by The Crusaders alive. Funk Jazz Formation plays grooving, lively and danceable classic and modern funk jazz, jazz interpretations of classic soul, and original compositions derived from the genre.
Funk Jazz Formation can appear as a 4 to 6-piece combo with two horns, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums. Each electric instrument runs a stage amplifier. Each horn player runs through a separate rig with microphone outputs. The drums are mic'd separately including a vocal microphone. It is preferred for the venue to provide sound reinforcement and backline. Please ask for our rider. The band can provide sound reinforcement and backline at a higher fee.

The set list is comprised primarily but not exclusively of classic funk jazz and covers of classic soul music along with original material. We are able to perform many classic jazz, R&B, funk and soul compositions. A set list is available upon request.
