For the Glory of God

I am an acoustic guitar player and vocalist often accompanied by my wife. We are well versed in contemporary praise and worship and also traditional hymns. I have been leading or participating as a member of praise and worship teams for some 25 years. I am a born again believer and have a heart for God and His people.

In the early 90's my pastor asked me to lead what he called a “praise and worship team.” A what? I asked. You see at the time I had no idea what he was talking about. In those days we selected 3 hymns from the hymnal and placed the selected hymn numbers in a rack located on the front wall. The music director, accompanied by the pianist, performed the selected hymns while the congregation referred to the hymnals and joined in. The concept of guitars, keyboards, and drums with vocalists was new. Don’t get me wrong, I love the old hymns. I still include them in worship. There’s a reason they’ve been in use for hundreds of years. But times have changed and I’ve changed with them.

I agreed to do it but not without some reservations, and to be honest, it was rough in the beginning. The congregation was skeptical of this new style of worship. It seemed awkward, singing without that familiar hymnal firmly in hand.

Over the years, what we now commonly refer to as “praise and worship” has become standard fare for most congregations. I’ve been blessed having had the privilege of leading and participating in several praise and worship teams over the years.

I was also fortunate to have been a member of a contemporary Christian parody band called Audience of One. We developed quite a following as we performed hits from the 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond changing the words to give glory to God (several samples of which are included on this page). We were fond of saying that the devil had the music for too long and we were taking it back one song at a time. As one goes through the adventures of life, God cause the pages to turn and now I find myself no longer in a band and between churches.

Always open to what the Lord might have in store it occurred to me that there may be a need for a part-time or one-time praise and worship leader to fill in from time to time. I willingly want to be used by God so, “here I am send me!.”
