About
Joseph R. Falconer began fiddle lessons in Kingsport, Tennessee when he was six years old, and by high school was playing guitar, bass, drums, violin, and cello. He received musical merit scholarships at Middle Tennessee State University and a graduate assistantship for The University of Tennessee’s “Strings in Our Schools” Initiative, receiving his bachelor’s and master's degrees in music education, with honors. He has also attended Eastern Music Festival & Summer Institute and the Brevard Music Institute on merit scholarships. After graduating, he began his teaching career in his hometown’s high school. He is a registered Suzuki Cello Method Instructor. His students have earned professional musical and teaching appointments, and scholarships in music at East Tennessee State University, The University of Tennessee, Duke University, and The Jacobs School at Indiana University.
From 2020 to 2025 he was an Adjunct Professor of Music at University of North Carolina - Asheville, Cello Faculty at Asheville’s Academy for the Arts, and conductor for the Asheville Symphony Youth Orchestra. As a cellist he has performed with orchestras, chamber groups, and theatrical groups across Tennessee and the Carolinas, and co-written and recorded music with Nashville-based alt-rock bands. He has appeared playing fiddle and cello on CBS News and was invited to discuss the significance of John Williams’ film scores on Blue Ridge Public Radio. After receiving assistance to replace his instruments following Hurricane Helene, Joe advocated charitable work as a spokesperson for Restring Appalachia, a nonprofit that provides instruments to musicians affected by natural disasters. Currently he is freelancing- filling all 12 months of the year with projects as a guest soloist, orchestral cellist, guitarist, and soundtrack composer, based in Bakersfield, California, and performs regularly with the Tahoe Philharmonic.
