Lucio Vieira Biography
Born in Manaus, Amazonas, drummer, percussionist and composer, Lucio Vieira, has never been one to sit still. He has toured the world, lived in Margarita and Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and has continued to refine his crafts of drumming and Contemporary Brazilian Music. Raised by a musician father, Lucio developed a keen sense of the art form as a child. From an early age, he was exposed to classical music, 80's/90's rock & soul, jazz, Brazilian music and the pop world of the 1990's. Such eclecticism would later come to shape his career.
After four years of drum lessons, Lucio began playing drums at the age of twelve. Studying without ceasing at Escala School of Music with Voulner Sá and Afrânio Girão in Manaus, City of the Amazon, he was quickly invited to assist the teacher with other students. After that, he started to teach in this school for four years.
In 1996, Lucio started to play in his first rock band. Since then he has been invited to play in dance bands in the local clubs of his hometown and all around the State of Amazon. At this moment Lucio Vieira established the beginning of his career as a professional musician without stopping his passion for teaching.
During high school, he went to Rio de Janeiro to improve the drum set technique and all styles of music. Having private lessons with the renowned Pascoal Meirelles (João Bosco, Edu Lobo, Tom Jobim, Gonzaguinha and others), led him to discover deeper inspiration.
In 1998, still in Manaus, Lucio studied theory of Music and the Art of Composition at the Amazon State University. At the same time, Lucio has been requested to play as an invited musician in the Amazon Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the maestro Julio Mhedaglia. After two years he became a member.
In the year of 2002, Lucio Vieira went to the Summer International Course of Brasilia Music School – DF where he had classes with Erivelton Silva (Rosa Passos) who taught him not only how to function as drummer in a band, but how to be a musician first.
Returning to Manaus in 2004, Lucio applied and was accepted into the Amazon Jazz Band (as a Drummer) and Acoustic Guitar of Amazon (as a Percussionist), where he worked as a teacher of The Claúdio Santoro Music Conservatory for two years.
Upon transferring to the city of Rio de Janeiro, in 2008, Lucio focused on Brazilian jazz drumming, studio production and contemporary composition. There he had private lessons with Chrystiaan Oyens, (drummer, guitar player and songwriter), and producers Cazuza, Lulu Santos, Zélia Duncan, Marina and more, that taught him the “Spivack” drum technique; forever changing his conception of creative drum techniques.
In Rio de Janeiro, Lucio began his career as an artist playing in the live performances and recording with famous artists of the Pop and the Brazilian Jazz scene, including; Leny Andrade, Gilberto Gil, Jane Duboc, Fátima Guedes, Maria Bethânia, Elba Ramalho, Arthur Maia, Gilson Peranzzeta, Dominguinhos, Rita Benneditto, Isabella Taviani, Luka, Danilo Caymmi, Wagner Tyso, Nelson Ayres, Nelson Faria, Ney Conceição, Mateus Starling, Roberto Menescal, João Donato, Idriss Boudrioua, Cliff Korman, Joana Duah, Luis Leite, Thiago Amud, Pedro Sá Moraes, and Zélia Duncan.
In 2009 in Rio de Janeiro, Lucio was a teacher in the well-known School of Drums and Percussion - Maracatu Brasil, for 2 years. Through the connections with inspiring teachers and students, Lucio was frequently requested to impart his knowledge all around the countryside of Brazil. He directly contributed to the increase and expansion of the Brazilian culture through workshops in the “Festival de Música do Amazonas”, Manaus, “Onde Canta o Sabiá”, Maranhão, “Projeto SOMP (Semana de Oficinas de Música do Pará)”, Parauapebas and “Enarte (Encontro de Artes de Belém)”, and Belém.
After gaining recognition in Brazil as a musician, Lucio received multiple invitations to play in Brazilian tours with great names of Contemporary Jazz music of the world: Cliff Korman, Larry Coryell, Allen Hinds and Frank Gambale. For over 8 years, Lucio began his career as an artist and started a thorough inquiry to develop a new conception about Brazilian Contemporary Music.
In 2012, together with his career in Brazil, Lucio did not stop his desire for education and decided to participate in the Drum Fantasy Camp in Cleveland, Ohio. This was his first time in the United States. He had classes with great drummers including William Kennedy (Yellowjackets), Peter Erskine (Steely Dan, Weather Report, Steps Ahead, Kate Bush), Keith Carlock (Sting, John Mayer, James Taylor) and Dave Weckl (Simon and Garfunkel, Chick Corea, Solo Artist). From this moment, Lucio Vieira went to United States once a year to continue his studies while having private lessons with the renowned drummer and educator Dave Weckl. The following years, 2014 to 2016 he returned for the NAMM Show (National Association of Music Merchants) in Anaheim, California. In the same time he performed at the Brazilian Explorative Music, an annual exhibition of Brazilian music in New York City, in partnership with BME (Brasil Music Exchange) that happens in the APAP/NY (Association of Performing Arts Presenters). The first edition that Lucio had performed with Pedro Sá Moraes, happened at SOB’s, at the second edition he performed with Pedro Sá Moraes and Thiago Amud, at Le Poisson Rouge. And the last edition, also at Le Poisson Rouge, he presented the ECO Music Project.
Produced in 2014 by Lucio and his partner Ivo Senra, the ECO Music Project sparked uncanny bridges between subverted Brazilian folk, jazz and electronic vanguard. This unusual Synths/Drums duo presents a whole new outlook on just how innovative contemporary Brazilian music can be. Overlaying pulsations like the northeastern “Boi” or even the well-trodden Bossa-nova claves, with deep textural fat synths remind us of the more experimental moments of Radiohead. The ECO duo claims its seat on the tradition of crossover artists like Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti.
The first album called "ECO" was recorded in New York City in January 2015 at the Bunker studios with the great collaboration of Jojo Meyer and The Nerve group currently based in New York City.
Also in 2015 Lucio had been invited as a drummer, percussionist and co-arrangement by the Coletivo Chama to the Tribute to Mario de Andrade (Brazilian poet, novelist, musicologist, art historian and critic, and photographer) in the 22nd Bienal de Música Brasileira Contemporânea that happened at Sala Cecília Meireles in Rio de Janeiro.
Besides his career as an irreplaceable artist in the Brazilian Music scene, Lucio has a continuum of work experience in music education with drums for 10 years and is actively participating in several projects of music education in nearly every Brazilian region, conducting workshops, master classes, Conservatory Music Teacher and private lessons.
Today, Lucio is one of the most essential artists, drummer and percussionist of the Brazilian Contemporary Music and jazz drumming scenes. His ongoing collaborated ECO MUSIC PROJECT continues advancing a Brazilian cultural interchange around the world through the Brazilian Explorative Music ensemble.
He is based in Los Angeles city working in live and studio sessions.
