Doug was absolutely phenomenal! From start to finish, he kept the audience laughing and engaged with his sharp wit and incredible ventriloquism skills. What made his performance truly stand out was his mastery of improv—he seamlessly wove in topics from the night, making the show feel fresh, personalized, and one-of-a-kind.
Engaging & Fun: Doug connected with the crowd effortlessly, keeping everyone entertained and involved.
Improv Genius: His ability to adapt and incorporate real-time moments into the act was brilliant.

What to expect
Doug tries to get as much information as possible about each event and audience so that he can customize his performance to the event. Communication is key, and he works hard to know what is expected and deliver the best performance for your event. Doug is very attentive to time. He will communicate ahead of time his planned arrival time and what will be needed for setup. He will stay within whatever time frame is given him.
Doug will typically put together a short promo video specifically for your event that can be used for promotion. these videos are typically 1-2 minutes in length and are posted to his youtube channel.
Performances are ALWAYS family friendly and clean. No need to worry about anything inappropriate at a DCMickan performance. The puppets do like to poke fun of Doug throughout the performance which is traditional to ventriloquism.
Performances vary, but the following are some typical show styles that Doug delivers:
Church Shows (30 minutes- 1.5 hours): There is such variety depending on his audience. Doug does church shows for the entire church, which features music and 3-5 puppets who help tell Bible stories and other Biblical principles. These performances can lead into a time of response. Doug was once referred to as an "evan-triloquist" (mix between an evangelist and a ventriloquist:) Doug also does lots of Kids' events like VBS, Camps, Children's Revivals, etc.... One of his favorite audiences is Senior Adult Groups who tend to enjoy the puppets just as much....if not more than the kids. Once again, Doug is always attentive to his audience.
Birthday Parties: A typical Birthday Party show is 30 minutes and features 3-4 puppets who interact with the kids and work to make the birthday child (or adult) feel special. We believe laughter is one of the best gifts you can give, and Doug & his cast of characters always deliver. Birthday Parties also include a Birthday Shout Out Video through a private YouTube link.
Libraries: 30-45 minutes. Library shows are customized to the theme or event. Doug uses 3-4 characters to entertain and do some storytelling while sharing the importance of reading and imagination.
Banquets, Festivals, Corporate Events: These all vary and are customized to your needs. These opportunities could be a single 10-15 minute skit with one of his characters, up to a full hour of fun with multiple puppets. Doug also likes to walk around and interact one-on-one with audience members when the opportunity presents itself. This can be helpful at fairs and festivals to get people to the actual performance. Contact Doug today to begin working on your event.
Whatever your event, Doug and his cast of characters are sure to deliver laughter and a memorable time.
About
Doug Mickan has been entertaining audiences with ventriloquism for over 32 years. Doug has always been fascinated by puppets, but he first learned ventriloquism at the age of 16 through a class at a local community college. Shortly after, he began getting invites to perform for local churches, birthday parties, nursing homes, banquets....you name it, and he has probably done it. Doug is a comic ventriloquist who captures the attention of everyone in attendance with his crazy cast of characters. He is very attentive to his audience and varies his performance based on who is watching. He works to customize each performance to the event, and loves to engage with audience members of all ages.
Doug is a Worship Pastor at his church. His passion is ministry, and a large part of his performances are for churches. Doug also does his fair share of events for libraries, schools, and other organizations. No matter what the venue is, performances are ALWAYS family friendly and clean.
Doug is also an accomplished songwriter and musician. He and his wife have released 3 albums with original Contemporary Christian, and Worship music. For church events (depending on the audience), Doug will mix in some music along with the ventriloquism.
Doug and his wife Cindy have been married for 24 years, and they have two children.
Additional booking notes
This rider is meant to be a simple guide for setting up a successful performance at your event. If you have any questions, or problems, or need clarification, please get in touch with Doug.
Stage: Doug performs in all kinds of environments, and he understands that while an elevated stage is ideal, it is not always possible. In any setting, Doug needs at least 8’ x 8’ as a performance area. Seating should be set up at least 6’ from the front of the “stage”. If children are sitting on the floor, provide a strip of tape or a rope to mark the front of the “stage”. **Doug does not need any stools or tables on stage. Please try to have a clear stage area.
Sound: For most venues, it is vital to have a sound system available for the performance. Doug needs either a wireless headset mic or a microphone on an adjustable stand. The sound system should be clear, & loud enough so that everyone in the audience can hear clearly through laughter and applause. Please allow time for a quick sound check before the audience arrives. Please be sure your sound tech is available for sound check
**Doug does have a small sound system available if needed. Please be sure to let Doug know if this will be needed. This of course is only possible if he is driving to the event. If Doug is providing the sound system, please be sure there is a power outlet near the stage.
Lighting: When available, basic lighting is requested for stage shows. General wash with concentrated lighting center/front of the stage. If house lighting can be controlled separately, it should be around 3/4 so that the audience is darker than the stage, but can still be seen for interaction.
Set Up/Strike: If the sound system is being provided for the venue, set up is very quick. Please have a place for Doug to park and unload as close to the performance area as possible. If Doug is setting up a sound system please allow 30 minutes for set up, and 30 minutes for strike.
Hospitality: A single bottle of water for Doug during the performance is very much appreciated.
