When you hire us, you can expect live jazz that brings energy, personality, and atmosphere to your event without overpowering the occasion.

We're a saxophone-led jazz combo based in Indianapolis, with flexible lineups of three to five performers to suit the size, style, and needs of your event. Our repertoire spans cool jazz, bebop, jazz standards, familiar favorites, and upbeat selections, so we can tailor the music to match your event's mood.

Our performances are driven by the connection between the musicians. You’ll hear tight arrangements, tasteful accompaniment, and plenty of room for improvisation, creating music that feels spontaneous and alive while remaining polished and cohesive. We can keep the sound smooth and understated during dinner or conversation, then raise the energy when the room is ready for something livelier.

We understand that our role is to complement your event, not compete with it. We’ll work with you to understand the atmosphere you want and shape the music accordingly. Whether you’re looking for elegant background jazz during a cocktail hour, an engaging soundtrack for a dinner party, or a high-energy performance that commands attention, we’ll tailor the experience to the occasion.

For holiday events, we can also include Christmas music and other seasonal favorites in our performance.

We arrive prepared and ready to perform, with our attire suited to the style and formality of your event. We can bring our own sound equipment when appropriate or use your venue's existing sound system, giving you flexibility based on your event's needs. We'll coordinate with you or your venue in advance regarding setup, performance space, timing, and any special requests.

We can perform one continuous set or divide the performance into multiple sets with breaks, depending on the event. We’re also happy to discuss specific songs or musical requests in advance whenever possible.

Most importantly, our goal is to make the music one less thing for you to worry about. You’ll receive a professional live jazz performance, and your guests will enjoy an experience that feels distinctive, relaxed, and memorable.

Dark ‘n Stormy is an energetic instrumental jazz combo from Indianapolis featuring five musicians: Chris Johnson (lead saxophone), Max Fricke (tenor saxophone), Owen Graves (keyboard and guitar), Blake Johnson (bass), and Dale Brinker (drums). They have played together for over ten years—even before formally forming the band. Through various projects and jam sessions, these musicians learned each other's styles and instincts. Their history turned casual jams into a group built on trust, chemistry, and deep connections forged over years of music-making.

Dark ‘n Stormy formed three years ago, focusing on feel, groove, and unique energy. They blend jazz traditions and creative exploration. Their sound emerges through improvisation and interaction in the moment. Chemistry ensures every show is different. Each performance grows from listening and responding, so the music always feels fresh.

After ten years together, the group brings both experience and a fresh, youthful style. They offer audiences more than their strong connection and passion for soulful, memorable moments. At their performances, music becomes a shared journey, fostering community and catharsis. Each show engages the listener, leaving a lasting, resonant impression.

Our setup is compact and flexible, requiring a performance area of approximately 6' x 4' or larger.

For a typical setup, we only require access to standard electrical power for up to two amplifiers. Depending on the venue size, layout, and desired volume, additional power connections may be needed for amplification. We can provide sound equipment as needed or use the venue's existing system.

We'll coordinate with the venue in advance to make sure the setup is appropriate for the space and event. A detailed technical rider is available upon request.
