About the Show:

Flamenco can best be interpreted as an expression of passion, pathos, joy and rebellion. Dancers and musicians stamp out their beats in unison with intricate footwork as singers intertwine their soulful melodies, transporting guests to the festive streets of the Spanish gypsies.

Dance Flamenco DC and its accompanying children’s program Flamenco 4 Kids!™ delivers an authentic show to audiences of all ages. Flaunting traditional costumes, castanets, shawls, and special dancing shoes, these performers aim to entertain and inspire with the dance and music of Andalucía, Spain.

A typical performance can be up to an hour, with the option of audience participation or a lesson as deemed appropriate to venue coordinators.

About

Born and raised in New York, Magdalena started dancing Flamenco in 1993 at the Open Center with Andrea del Conte. By the mid 90's she was traveling to Sevilla to study with the legendary family of El Farruco. Upon her return Magdalena was inspired to help revive the local scene. She then “cut her teeth” dancing, singing and playing cajon in well known clubs downtown such
as Alegrías, Kaña and Xunta- weekly shows which would last more than a decade.

Magdalena combines her background in music, sociology and education to teach people of all ages. Today almost 30 years later, she is still inspired by her first mentors from New York City and Andalucía. Magdalena continues uniting these passions via her own performance and the production of her students' recitals. In 2013 she moved with her family from NYC to Washington D.C.. and inspired by her little dancing daughter she created Flamenco 4 Kids!™ - a community based organization which has served over a dozen private and public schools in the area.

Magdalena’s strongest influences today remain the artists with whom she trained extensively in Sevilla: Farruquita, Angelita Vargas, Pastora Galván, Isabel Bayón, Miguel Vargas, Esperanza Fernandez, Alejandro Granados, Juana Amaya, to name a few. She has been awarded grants from The Field and Fractured Atlas for her work as an independent performance artist. In 2022 Magdalena received a Fellowship from DC's Department of Arts and Humanities. Her goal since moving to the area has been to directly integrate flamenco artistry from Spain with the international community of DC.
