Overview

I’m Josh Levine, bassist and leader of Cuarteto Guataca, a NYC based band specializing in Salsa and Son Cubano. Our all-star roster features world renowned flutist Itai Kriss, virtuoso guitarist Román Lajara, one of NYC's most in demand singers, María Raquel, and the multi Grammy winning flutist and vocalist Jeremy Bosch of The Spanish Harlem Orchestra.
Legendary NYC sonero Jainardo Batista is a founding member of the group but he is performing in Buena Vista Social Club on Broadway, so percussionist and vocalist Caleb Michel of The Afro Cuban All-Stars is filling in until Jainardo is available again.
We work in different formats from solo to sextet.

INCREDIBLE band for a wedding!

Cuarteto Guataca was such an amazing band to have at our wedding. They went above and beyond when it came to planning, their flexibility, and their execution. They are an incredible group of talented musicians who got all the dancers dancing and the non dancers dancing too! They played while my guests entered, for the bridal processional, cocktail hour, and our wedding. We love to see them perform around the city, where we live but to have them travel all the way to CT for our wedding was even more of a treat. We had multiple people ask us for their information at our wedding and want to see them live or book them themselves! We couldn't be happier!

Christmas 75th Birthday to remember!

We had the absolute pleasure of having this incredible pair of musicians play at my husband’s 40th birthday party, and they completely transformed the atmosphere. Their Latin music brought so much energy, warmth, and joy to the night. People were dancing, singing along, and genuinely having the best time. Even after the party, guests kept texting and talking about how amazing the music was and how special they made the event feel. About

I’m a native New Yorker, fluent in Spanish, and father of twin boys since 2022. I love playing music with my band mates, putting smiles on dancing people’s faces.

Living in NYC has allowed me to continue a rich musical education as I learn on the job in multiple genres.

For years I was the bassist for the Monday night swing band at The Cotton Club, led by the Pasante brothers, Eddie and Al.

I learned to play Cuban son from José Luis Martínez, one of the founding members of Cuba’s iconic Los Van Van.

I was schooled in the folkloric music of Venezuela by Roberto Fuentes, founder and director Venezuela’s Alpargata Cantorum.

With Los Acustilocos I arranged and played for tenor Gaston Rivero at Carnegie Hall and presented my original music at Merkin Concert Hall.

When NYC shut down in Spring of 2020 I began to play regularly in the parks of New York CIty with longtime colleague, percussionist and sonero, Jainardo Batista. We were joined regularly by flutist Itai Kriss making his debut on the Cuban trés guitar and María Raquel Sandino Vásquez on vocals and minor percussion. Before long, we had generated some buzz and several venues hired us to play in their outdoor spaces.

There’s a mini documentary on PBS All Arts Channel about our experience as performing artists during the pandemic, with a focus on Jainardo.

While home base is the double bass, I also play piano, guitars and accordions.

Busking or street performing has been an important part of my training and has helped me develop a big acoustic sound on my instrument. I paid my dues busking with doo wop veterans Cover Story, Spank and Acapella Soul. I also logged many hours performing al fresco with The Flying Neutrinos, The Jazz Park Rangers and singing guitarist Frank Schaap.
