Leadership, Education, Marriage/Divorce, and Why History Matters...
I have four main topics that I speak about, all of which are important to me because of the way in which my experiences in these areas have impacted my life. The four topics are leadership ("Power of Confident Humility"), education ("What Are You Doing Here?"), marriage/divorce ("Truth and Love"), and the importance of learning history ("Why History Matters"). I’d like to share my stories with you so that you can learn from my mistakes and go on to even greater successes in your own life. I am available to share on these topics in a wide variety of settings.

What to Expect
Most of my message is in the form of story-telling. As a teacher, I believe stories are tremendously powerful, and so I engage audiences in the ancient art of story-telling in order to help them understand the main themes of my message in a way that stays with them long after the event is over.
My main message is about the transforming Power of Humility, about how a different approach to life will help you lead, learn, and live better that before. It is about changing the way we view life in order to be more content and more compassionate toward others.
In addition to the Power of Humility, I have four other topics in which I apply the message of humility: leadership, education, and marriage/divorce. Each of these topics is important to me because of the way in which my experiences in these areas have impacted my life. In each of these areas I have had some great success as well as having learned from making plenty of mistakes. I’d like to share my stories with you so that you can learn from my mistakes and go on to even greater successes in your own life.
I have been fortunate to serve in a wide variety of leadership roles in my thirty-plus years. These roles include leading a family as a husband and father, leading various athletic teams as an assistant or a head coach, and leading classrooms and camps of students and athletes in both traditional and workshop settings. Through these different opportunities, I have developed a leadership style that can best be characterized in two words: “Confident Humility.”
I’ve also been in education for over a decade, having taught 5th-12th grades at various times. I have taught mostly history, though I also spent time teaching English, math, science, P.E., study skills, and Bible. I’ve taught in private schools, a public school, Christian schools, a Muslim academy, and I also currently teach English to Russian students via the internet. In my time as a teacher, I have refined my approach to education, and I’d love to share it with you, starting with the simple question that I ask all of my students on the first day of class: “What are you doing here?”
I come from a divorced home, and I have also been through a divorce as an adult. I am now very happily remarried, and I’m also very thankful to say that my wife and my ex-wife (along with her husband) all work very hard to do the best we can to take care of our two daughters. Having gone through the divorce process as both a child and as an adult, I’ve learned many valuable lessons that I’d love to share. My sincere hope is that my story can both encourage you and help you, and that message begins with the simple phrase (which is also our family’s motto): “Truth and love.”
I am a high school history teacher, and one of the greatest and most useful ways to learn humility is through the study of history. Many students today are done a disservice by the way history is often taught: boring timelines, too many worksheets, etc. My goal is to help people see that history, far from being dry and dead, is alive, entertaining useful, and most of all, practical. I like to help people see "Why History Matters."
Hello, and welcome! My name is Joel Wesley Hawbaker, and I am a 35-year-old teacher and soccer coach at Westbrook Christian School in Rainbow City, Alabama. I live in Anniston with my beautiful wife Maryellyn, two wonderful daughters, and two rambunctious dogs. I love to talk with people and to encourage them by sharing my stories in the hope that they too will see the transforming Power of Humility in their own lives. Thanks for taking the time to check me out, and I will be glad to help you however I can.

I have been very heavily influenced by the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, both in terms of the principles I discuss and in terms of their ability to tell amazing stories.
