Overview
A string ensemble with a passion for traditional and contemporary Celtic music. We play instrumental music from Ireland, Scotland, the United States, Canada, and Brittany. We play public and private events; bars, restaurants, parties, festivals, dances, and weddings. Our musical style ranges from traditional tune sets, perfect for background and casual listening, to tight arrangements for dances and engaged listening. All of our music is instrumental, meaning that we do not sing! We have collaborated for a number of years and are excited to share our passion with new audiences!

March 16, 2026Amazing performance
2 musicians rode our St Patrick’s day float providing traditional Celtic music to thousands of parade watchers.
Then we danced to the music after the parade!
We felt like we were in Ireland!!!

July 30, 2025Talented and engaging group
We so enjoyed having Ceol Amuigh at our social club’s annual dinner. They commmunicated with us about our expectations early on. They were very well-organized and punctual almost to a fault - just incredibly professional group. Plus we asked if they could lead our group in a couple of Scottish country dances (it was a theme party), and they did that charmingly as well. All in all, they get an enthusastic recommendation!

What to expect
We play as a duo, a trio, and sometimes a quartet. We prefer to use our own microphones for our instruments, unless your application has very specific requirements and you are able to provide equipment. We can bring our own amplification (PA speakers, XLR cables) but if your space has its own system, we would prefer to use that. We do take travel time and expenses into account when providing quotes, and our level of training and professionalism is reflected in our asking prices.
If you have specific music you would like us to learn, we require parts, sheet music, lead sheets, and/or recordings at minimum 2 weeks before the date of the performance in order to learn, practice, and rehearse the music. If left up to us, we will play traditional instrumental Irish and Scottish music. We require at minimum a ten minute break for every 2 hours of playing.
About
We are Ceol Amuigh- a project that Peter Subramanian started in the summer of 2024 with the help of Downtown Boston Alliance! Ceol Amuigh is Irish for "music outside," which is exactly what we are- Celtic (Irish and Scottish) traditional music played outside the typical pub, restaurant, and bar spaces- even "outside," if the weather permits it!
Our ensemble changes depending on who is available, but we generally have guitar and at least one fiddle. Sometimes we play with a second fiddle, or a cellist, and sometimes we even play as three fiddles! Our strengths lie in not only our professional-level training and our commitment to being a part of the folk music scene in Boston and beyond, but also in our familiarity with each other and our flexibility as an ensemble. We all have experience playing in pubs, in weddings, in concert halls, and in stranger locations (I think a few of us have played on boats!) We are very excited to meet you and to provide authentic music and a professional experience for whatever your event or venue might be.
Additional booking notes
We each require about 3.5 feet of space (10.5 feet if in a line, a little less if arced or facing each other) in order to play safely and comfortably. We require enough lighting to properly read each other's facial expressions at this distance from each other. We must be able to hear each other, which may require a monitor speaker (we can provide) or monitor earphones (you must provide). Please message us if you have any further questions!
