Expected more.

I had seen Brian perform prior to booking him but this time around, it was just okay. I had higher expectations for fresher material. There were times when the audience was not as engaged with the comedy which was disappointing. Also, I wish he had his own equipment because the performer knows what equipment works best for their act than the average Joe would.

Standup comedy is one of the hardest industries to be in because regardless of the situation you are expected to be perfect. Under normal circumstances I have exceeded the expectations of my client. I made it very clear that I didn’t have my own equipment and that I needed the client to provide a microphone and a speaker system. I had doubts about doing the show once I found out the restaurant did not have the required elements to do a successful event. To avoid disappointing the client I agreed to continue with the show. It’s difficult to entertain a crowd that is distracted by undisciplined children, servers walking in and out of the performance area, and an overall uncontrolled atmosphere. Regardless, I traveled over 3 hours, paid for my own lodging, and remained professional as a way to attempt to please the client. New, and clean material is difficult to create and perform especially in a uncontrollable atmosphere. I am constantly working on new material since my special aired on Showtime. In future I will continue to be professional and stick to the agreement made during the booking of the event. I have been doing comedy for over 18 years and I have no doubts in my ability when presented with an atmosphere that is conducive to comedy. This is the first and hopefully last time I will revive a review like this because I will be more conscious of the bookings I take and the situations I’m put in as a comedian. It’s unfortunate that the client would not take more responsibility in the outcome of the event but as a professional I understand the ups and downs of the entertainment industry. You win some and you lose some and you hope that your wins overcome your loses. This is a learning experience and look forward to continuing to please my clients and audiences throughout the nation and even abroad. Comedy is a Marathon and I look forward to staying focused on my journey.
