Bobby West was born a fifth-generation Louisianian with deep ancestral roots in New Orleans—lineages that recent research has traced to the Caribbean and West Africa.
Although widely respected as a pianist and composer for decades, West did not release a formal debut album until 2021. Leimert Park After Dark received critical acclaim and was followed by Big Trippin’ in 2023; both albums reached the Top 20 on the jazz charts and the Top 10 on the roots charts. His earlier recording HipProphecy was re-released that same year. Requiem for Mary Turner marks his fourth album and represents a major artistic statement in his evolving body of work.

Influences and inspiration
Influenced by the great lineage of jazz piano, Bobby West draws inspiration from artists such as Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner, and Herbie Hancock. Their blend of swing, blues feeling, harmonic sophistication, and rhythmic invention helped shape Bobby’s musical foundation.
His sound is also deeply informed by the soul and gospel traditions of artists like Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, whose influence can be heard in the warmth, groove, and lyrical expressiveness of his playing. Bobby also draws inspiration from the fearless musicality and genre-blending spirit of Prince, whose work exemplifies how funk, soul, and jazz sensibilities can merge into a powerful, modern sound.
Drawing from these traditions, Bobby’s music blends classic jazz language with blues feeling, soulful phrasing, and a strong sense of groove, creating performances that are both sophisticated and deeply engaging for listeners.
