Blues Battalion, as a band, has been together for about 6 years with some changes in members over those years, but its current members come from a long history of experience in blues, jazz, and rock. The band is based in Gresham, Oregon, and gigs about one or two nights per week.
Fred Riedel (Lead Guitar & Vocals): Fred is the founder/leader of Blues Battalion and has played for many years with different groups. He played bass for quite a while with a touring group called Questor playing various locations from Southern California to Northern Idaho. Fred now plays acoustic and electric guitar and enjoys blues, jazz and swing. He is studying jazz with jazz guitarist Scott McDevitt. Fred plays mostly finger-style, being influenced by Wes Montgomery, who played with just his thumb. Fred once played with a group that did the opening act at a Buck Owens concert in California. He has taught music in a high school in eastern Oregon. He recently retired as an educator, and if focusing more on his music now. Fred has written many songs, with many of his tunes on the Blues Battalion CD recorded a couple years ago called "A Smile From Kyle." Fred also plays for his worship group at his church, and writes many songs for them as well.
Kristi Riedel (Vocals): Kristi has been involved in a great variety of choirs and musical groups since a very young age. She fell in love with blues and jazz music while involved in swing and blues dancing in college. Blues Battalion is Kristi's first venture singing with a band and she is grateful for the opportunity to perform with her father, Fred.
Tomi Bell (Vocals - not pictured): Tomi has just started with Blues Battalion. She was a professional singer down in Los Vegas and recently moved to Portland.
Leo Hartshorn (drums): Leo joined Blues Battalion recently. Leo was co-founder and co-director of Drumming for Peace, an organization that teaches and witnesses publicly for peace through drumming, rhythm, storytelling, and music. He has played drums for over 50 years (his 1968 group Beauregard Ajax's CD "Deaf Pricilla" was released in June of 2006 by Shadoks Records). Leo has combined his passions for peace and drumming and has offered such programs as "A Joyful Noise" to all ages and various denominations across the U.S. Drumming for Peace has provided a program called "Found Sounds," featured in Sept.- Oct. 2003 edition of Soujourners Magazine, an afterschool program in Lancaster. Leo teaches a credited course entitled "Sacred Drumming: Drumming as a Spiritual Practice" at Lancaster Theological Seminary, has presented the Staley Lectures on Drumming for Peace at Bethel College and presented drumming programs at Goshen College, Eastern Mennonite University, and Messiah College. Leo is also an accomplished artist, much of his art focused on big name musicians like Jimmy Hendrix. His paintings are absolutely beautiful. Check them out on his Facebook page.
Michael Conner (guitar): Michael, an educator by profession, has been playing for many years. He is the founder of MYConner Sound, and does recording in his own studio. He has played with Blues Battalion for the past few years, and adds a great deal to our sound and current style. Both his father and his aunt played guitar. He began playing guitar at age 12, after giving up the accordion, french horn, and double bass. He went to college at Penn State, and did concerts with friends there. Later he moved to Connecticut and started playing with a couple friends (both named John). After moving to Eugene he started playing music all the time. With Beat Soup, The Caretakers, and others he played gigs all over Eugene and Corvallis. He started writng songs and some of those showed up on his 2002 CD "Connected." He started teaching in Mapleton, OR and kept writing songs, playing solo gigs, and was interviewed on a Florence radio station. After 4 years he moved to Portland, He first played electronic music with "River Junction" in the Portland area. THey played many festivals, some of those at Horning's Hideout. At the same time he accompanied Geoff Byrd as he began his singing career. The did duo gigs at Dublin Pub, Bitter End, Starbucks and other venues. He has been a welcome addition to Blues Battalion.
Mike Kelley (bass): Mike has played guitar for many years, and has recently revived his bass playing expertise. Mike jams with other musicians in the area often, and plays guitar with keyboardist Joe Defoney in a small group. He is an excellent bassist, playing guitar type leads on bass often.
Mike Amen (blues harp): Mike, our blues harp player, is a military man and learned to play while in the service. Mike loves the blues. Mike only plays with us occasionally, but will be added more and more in future months.
