Influences and inspiration

My greatest musical influence is Loris “Manny” Caines, the legendary Caribbean-born Pan Master who founded L.C. and the Steel Drum Factory in St. Petersburg, Florida. Originally from St. Kitts and trained under renowned Trinidadian pan master Elli Mandt, Manny dedicated his life to teaching and preserving the art of steel pan music for young people throughout the community.

L.C. and the Steel Drum Factory grew through the cultural support of the St. Petersburg International Folk Fair Society (SPIFFS), an organization focused on celebrating world cultures through music, dance, and community engagement. Under Manny’s leadership, the group became known as the first all-American steel drum band. It introduced audiences across Florida to the energy and cultural richness of Caribbean steel pan music.

My mother, Dr. Hildegarde Shirley, also played a major role in shaping my musical and personal foundation. As a respected community leader, educator, and labor activist, she believed strongly in discipline, cultural pride, education, and the power of the arts to bring people together.

Manny taught much more than music. He taught professionalism, teamwork, rhythm, discipline, and stage presence. He personally built, tuned, and played the steel drums while mentoring young musicians, including my siblings and me, from an early age.

As a child, I traveled and performed throughout Florida with L.C. and the Steel Drum Factory at festivals, cultural celebrations, sporting events, country clubs, and community gatherings. The group performed for organizations connected to the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Air Jamaica, SPIFFS cultural events, and Caribbean community celebrations throughout the region.

Those experiences shaped my understanding of live entertainment, audience connection, and the emotional power of music to create energy and community.

Today, the influence of Manny Caines, SPIFFS, and the values instilled by my mother continue to shape the AverageMan with Style Tropical Experience. Every performance blends live steel pan, rhythm, atmosphere, and audience engagement with the belief that music should do more than entertain — it should create connection, memory, and experience.
