Being in a band with siblings usually means that there are many shared memories. For the three brothers of Avenida, a commonly discussed memory is that of our father “volunteering” us to play for other people. When the inevitable “Do I have to do this?” was asked his response was always the same, “You aren’t learning music to keep it to yourself. You are learning music to be a blessing to someone who needs it.” That mantra has become a guidepost for the band and helped reorient us when we get discouraged. A portion of the proceeds from every Avenida event goes towards helping provide music and art classes for people with disabilities at Desert Arc, a local non-profit serving the people of the Coachella Valley. It is our way of staying true to our desire to be a blessing with the music that we play.
