Andrew Schoettler Music

Andrew Schoettler is a drummer and bandleader based in Guelph, Ontario. Known for his dynamic groove, grounded musicality, and versatility, Andrew draws from jazz, funk, R&B, soul, blues, and pop. He performs throughout Guelph and southern Ontario in a variety of settings, from intimate jazz ensembles and restaurant performances to larger concerts, private events, and community events.

There was no particular reason Andrew first picked up the drums—it just clicked. With a musical mother and a home full of rhythm, music was always present around him. What began as a casual interest gradually became a central part of his life, leading him to pursue music through live performance, ensemble playing, and continued study.

Andrew studied at the University of Guelph, earning an Honours Bachelor of Mathematics with a focus in Mathematical Science while also completing a minor in Music. His musical development has been shaped by years of playing in different ensembles and styles, as well as by the mentorship of musicians who emphasized feel, musicality, listening, and the importance of serving the music rather than simply playing the drums.

As a performer, Andrew approaches the drums with a balance of structure and spontaneity. He is comfortable supporting a vocalist or instrumentalist, locking into a groove-driven ensemble, interpreting jazz standards, or helping lead a group through a full live performance. His playing is rooted in the belief that the drummer's role is not simply to keep time, but to contribute to the character, energy, and conversation of the music.

As a bandleader, Andrew organizes and leads groups for performances across a range of genres and settings. He regularly works with musicians from the local community to build ensembles suited to each performance, whether that means an intimate jazz duo, a small jazz combo, or a larger group drawing on R&B, funk, soul, and popular music.

Andrew is also the founder and host of the Silence Jazz Jam, a monthly event created to bring musicians together in a welcoming and collaborative environment. The jam has become part of his broader involvement in Guelph's music community, giving local players an opportunity to meet, experiment, and perform together.

Beyond his own performances, Andrew is interested in contributing to a stronger and more connected live music scene in Guelph. He continues to pursue opportunities to perform, collaborate with other musicians, and create spaces where both musicians and audiences can engage with live music.
