What to Expect
Al Val is a dedicated, high-energy, physical (as you can she in the photos, Val is no stranger to climbing on stools and running across stages in a deep squat!) and spontaneous comedian, so expect to get drawn in enthusiastically from the moment she steps onstage!
With the booking agent's consent, of course, Val is also very quick-witted and plays with the audience, often seamlessly weaving crowd interaction into her act. She is highly sensitive and an excellent reader of the room though, and not only has an instinct for who's a good sport and who wants to be left alone, but also engages with volunteers with playfulness. There is never any malice, degradation, humiliation, or ill will in Val's crowdwork.
Besides that, Val's material delves fairly heavily into her journey as a transgender woman, but also always illustrates a deeper point about societal gender norms and dynamics, what it's like being a "newbie" in an ambitious and highly scrutinized endeavour, and the challenges of connecting deeply not only with the people around us, but to ourselves.
In summary, expect a high-energy, physical, spontaneous, interactive, insightful and deep-thinking act that you won't forget.
About
Al Val is a comedian/musician/actress from Toronto. Her honest and insightful yet silly and spontaneous account of her transgender journey has turned heads across North America and has earned her repeat appearances at renowned festivals such as Just For Laughs, JFL Toronto and Vancouver, Off-JFL/Zoofest, Halifax Comedy Festival, The Arctic Comedy Festival, and many others, as well as earned her a writing role on the 30th season of "This Hour Has 22 Minutes". Though she has taped standup performances for CBC Gem, Crave, & CTV, hosts her of podcast "PodGis", and was a lead cast member on OutTV's "Drag Heals" season 3, Al Val is surely an act that must be seen in person to be believed - and celebrated!
