What to Expect
We perform mostly contemporary music with only our voices; that means no amps or drum kits to set up. We love to interact with the crowd and have fun as we perform. Above all, we perform interesting music in innovative arrangements. You can expect to hear a modern hit flipped on its head or an oldie mashed up with another song - anything is fair game.
About
Since 2000, we have been spreading joy through song, building unbelievable friendships, and expanding our repertoire to include every imaginable genre of music: from pop to rock, Sara Bareilles to Alex Clare to Ben E. King! Our members all come from different backgrounds, with individual talents that we showcase with our variety of songs and styles. Most importantly, After Hours is a close-knit group of friends who come together through our love of singing and our passion to make the world a little bit brighter! Formed in 1998 as a vocal jazz group, After Hours was originally called "Charivari." However, two years later, the group dynamic changed and the members therefore decided to transition from singing solely vocal jazz music, to also incorporating other genres, such as rock and pop. Thus, "Charivari" evolved into one of the University of Rochester's newest a cappella ensembles: After Hours. Since its rebirth, After Hours has grown within the Rochester community. We exclude no musical genre and continually strive to expand our repertoire to include new and innovative musical styles and techniques.
We have, since our conception, been able to perform at a wide array of events ranging from inner city schools in the Big Apple, private events in local Rochester, and gala events and banquets throughout the Northeast. As college students, we are eager to take breaks from our studies to share our passion for music with others. After Hours is active during the University of Rochester school year: mid September through early May. Contact us for more information!
Additional Booking Notes
At smaller intimate venues we can comfortably perform acoustic. However, we may require an amplification setup (microphones and speakers) for larger spaces. Properly setting up microphones for a cappella can be complicated, but it usually means a couple area microphones (usually condensers), complemented by 3-5 dynamic microphones for lead soloist, vocal percussion, bass, and any counter-solos or harmonies.
While we don't require lighting, any performance looks better with a light show - but we'll leave that up to you!
