Your sample video seemed to fit the occasion- vocals are not necessary unless you feel they are appropriate at the moment. Everything below is merely a suggestion, but not required: Hallelujah (inside the church during the service) Afterward at the reception: I'll Fly Away Tumbling Tumbleweeds Ghost Riders in the Sky Will the Circle Be Unbroken 16 Tons - not sure how this works on a fiddle but it kinda fits his ethic and playfulness Over the Rainbow- yes, I now it is practically cliche these days but he still responded to it even when he couldn't speak Stafford was not particularly religious. He loved bluegrass, fiddle, Sons of the Pioneers, Burl Ives, Johnny Cash, and just about anything about working hard or being hard working. He was a cattle rancher, farmer, military air mechanic and veteran with flat feet.
This is a celebration for an amazing person who shot for 106 but only made it to 96. The trouble with living that long is that you outlive most of your family and friends, not to mention that it then becomes hard for those attending to realize how full of life this person was without real live music, especially some fiddle to illustrate and pay honor to a life that almost lasted nearly a century. This event is for a small group, meeting in a sweet little chapel surrounded by miles by farmland in every direction. Your talents would be needed either for the minimum of 10 - 20 min at reception, or 5 min at the ceremony and 10 - 20 min at the reception. There are a few options where your talents would be best suited: (open to your ideas) 10:30 event starts inside Mary's Chapel, eulogy of an amazingly fun yet silently humble man 10:40 you could play a little 3-5 min session (perhaps Hallelujah or something appropriate- up for suggestion) 10:45 guests are invited to walk to the gravesite to continue service 11:10ish guests reconvene on the grounds for a light reception: music, nibbles, and share stories. Once again, I am open to your suggestion and sense of reading a crowd. We would like this to be respectful yet lighthearted. Stafford loved music.
