About
In the mid-2000’s Joey Atilano was a young, up and coming rapper from Ontario,
California using the stage name of 60 East. Having gotten into the Hip Hop
culture and taking music seriously from the age of nine as a result of the idolising
of his older brother and the group of friends his sibling surrounded himself with,
the ambitious dreams of 60 East were put on hiatus momentarily after the main
artist attached to his brothers label was murdered.
Dropping out of high school, Joey worked in construction as he tried desperately
to make as much money as he could, simply to live off of. Soon enough, his desire
and natural talent to make music became impossible to surpress. Upon a reunion
with a few of his brother’s old friends, 60 East earned a bittersweet urge to jump
back into the music thousands have come to love and respect, after losing his
father to cancer in 2010.
Now, a decade since he first picked up a mic, 60 East has a string of accolades
which include the Hottest Up and Coming Artist in the West Coast of 2011 by
KRUSH Magazine and the Best Hip Hop Artist of 2014, voted by the readers of
IEWeekly. Aside from official awards, the Ontario emcee has shown that hard
work can pay off after he campaigned for a full year for the chance to perform at
The Paid Dues Festival 2013, which proved successful, seeing him added to a bill
alongside Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore, Talib Kweli amongst others. The rapper
also performed 3 dates of The Vans Warped Tour alongside Linkin Park and has
founded his own tour, in partnership with the First Dirt collective he is a
member of. The Declaration of Independents is an effort to build unity within the
independent Hip Hop scene and became an official partner of The Indie
Entertainment Summit, the main sponsor of the tour.
More recently, 60 East has been working with artists like Blu and Skyzoo as he
readies the release of his “10,000 Hours” album, expected to drop this year. The
LP comes off the back of a critically acclaimed mixtape, in which he collaborates
with the producer Omega. The initial instalment of “The Freeway Series”
attained worldwide acclaim, predominantly as a result of the topical “Andy’s
Song” which won awards from Black Truth Magazine and ChannelPick.
Be sure to keep up to date with 60 East’s movements in the coming months and
beyond, because given his impressive work rate and awe-inspiring ability when
it comes to music – it’s only a matter of time before he builds on his sublime
success so far, and becomes the next big thing in independent Hip Hop.
