Simple table booth set up with descriptions about what henna is with example works pictured on the table. Chairs and stools for artist and henna recipients when in process and optional rug with pillows for lounge area if recipients choose to relax while the henna sets in. If the venue is outside, an E-Z up canopy can be set up overhead.
Attendees may choose from a catalogue of designs or receive a custom piece they or artist envisions. The time duration and amount of henna given to recipients can vary given the scope of the event. If it’s a large event with hundreds of people that may want henna: 10-15 minute sessions with smaller to medium sized designs and detail. If the event is more intimate with a smaller group, then we can allow for larger pieces with fuller detail and no time constraints. This is merely a general guideline and can be flexible.
Born and raised in Houston, I’ve always had a deep love for its diversity and plethora of cultures that thrive here. Being able to experience the foods, styles and traditions of so many backgrounds from across the globe, my fascination of their aesthetics only grew; of what defined them at a glance.
Ever since I can remember I’ve always enjoyed drawing as a pastime, recreating what I see in front of me or pulling from my imagination. Most of the time it was the later. As I grew and changed, so did the subject of my creativity.
My adolescent work largely consisted of dinosaurs, monsters, super hero’s and the like from tv, books, and video games. From around Middle school through early high school I became infatuated with more of the macabre. Enthralled by skeletal forms, they often found their way into my inspirations simply because I enjoyed the aesthetics they provided.
Maturing into adulthood, my thoughts became colored with curiosity for life and death, for the inner workings of humanity and what makes us into who we are as individuals and a whole. I contemplated and questioned societal norms, politics, religion, philosophy, and spirituality. What is this form we exist in and where does this consciousness go when its vessel withers and fades? During this time, continuing into today, my style reflects these curiosities and seeks to portray them through the many cultural influences I have been blessed to experience throughout my life.
Just to name a few stylistic favorites, I find myself gravitating towards Indian, middle eastern, Nordic, Celtic, Japanese, and tribal accents from the Americas and Africa.
As I come to learn and understand more of these peoples cultures, history and legends; so does my love grow for how it’s displayed and depicted through visual art.
And what better way to share this love than to give it to another through henna! Being able to experience the beauty of one’s own or another’s culture on the body, without the weight of permanence. Or if there is an idea for a permanent tattoo one would like, but is still unsure about committing to, they can try it out for a couple weeks until the henna fades.
Henna takes around 30 minutes to dry fully so make sure to keep it safe and avoid bumping into the paste to avoid smearing.
- Be prepared to have the area that you want henna on to be uncovered for at least 30-45 minutes.
- Make sure to avoid any lotions or oils before hand in the area that will be hennaed.
- You will want to avoid water for the first day after application so be sure to shower before hand.
Try and leave the paste on for several hours (or as long as you can) as leaving the paste on your skin for longer will help develop a better, deeper, longer lasting stain. Remember it’s a natural plant dye so it needs time to sit on your skin to work!
When the paste dries it may start to flake and fall off on its own. This is okay! Let it fall off naturally on it’s own and if it’s still there before you go to bed go ahead and scrape or pick it off.
Never use soap and water to take off the henna paste.
Using soap and water to take off the henna paste will result in a much lighter stain that will not last.
For the first day your stain will appear to be bright orange in color, and then eventually darken to a dark brown or mahogany in color.
(To help ensure a nice dark stain try to avoid water for the first 24 hours)
Henna is absolutely safe if pregnant.
Music is optional.
If there is music being played at the event I will refrain from playing my own. Otherwise it will be a mix of genres played from a small Bluetooth speaker, ranging from varied lo-fi and traditional tracks to whatever preference may be requested.
