The Chuck Nation Band is a 4-piece bluegrass music band based in North Georgia led by Chuck and Susan Nation. They have performed over 300 shows since 2010, and are returning for their second tour of Ireland in 2014. Their new CD, On A High High Mountain, which also features Bluegrass Pioneer Curtis Blackwell, was released August 2013. One of Chuck’s YouTube videos has already reached over 30,000 hits!
Whether it’s old favorites, modern songs, or original material, The Chuck Nation Band delivers toe-tapping music that engages and entertains an audience from the moment they take the stage until the rousing applause at the end
Multi-instrumentalist Chuck Nation plays fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo, and bass equally well, as one of his latest CDs will attest. He has won numerous awards and contests throughout the South with all instruments, including the 2013 Georgia State Fiddle Championship, the 2012 Georgia State Mandolin Championship and Louisiana State Fiddle Championship!
Chuck was a member of Louisville, Kentucky’s legendary contemporary bluegrass group, The Bluegrass Alliance, whose alumni include Sam Bush, Vince Gill and Tony Rice. Chuck has played at most every major bluegrass festival, has performed across the U.S., Europe, Japan, Alaska, Canada, and at such prestigious venues as the Grand Ole Opry, the New Orleans World's Fair, and the Savannah Music Festival. He has played at college campuses, festivals, churches, theaters, clubs, state fairs, village squares, and on street corners to audiences as small as one and as large as 90,000. Chuck has worked on TV and radio, as a studio musician, traveled extensively with various professional groups, and opened shows for a diverse list of folks ranging from Ernest Tubb to Mother Maybelle Carter to Mac Davis to John Hartford. He has shared the stage and played with the likes of Bluegrass luminaries Bill Monroe, Mac Wiseman, Sam Bush, Vassar Clements, Buck White, Dan Crary, Byron Berline, Allen Shelton, and many others.
Susan Nation grew up in a musical family, learning to sing and play the acoustic upright bass by playing music with her dad and brother, Denny Blount, who played banjo with the legendary Jim & Jesse McReynolds. Later, when she met and married Chuck, they performed together at venues like the New Orleans World's Fair, in the group Country Comfort, and as a family group in churches, conferences, TV, and radio programs across the southeast and in many foreign countries. Susan has played and sang at festivals and concerts throughout the southeast, including the famed Savannah Music Festival, and recorded with different groups through the years. In addition to performing with Nation and Blackwell, she is a favorite on-call bass sideman and singer for various regional groups, including The Nation & Blackwell Band (Ireland Tour), The Hoyles, and the widely popular Americana group, Bluebilly Grit. Her solid timing on bass coupled with her high tenor and lead vocals helps to balance out this talented group.
