About
REAL JAZZ from BIG SUNFLOWER
Tapping into the great standards of Porter and Gershwin, the exciting bebop of Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, and the complex jazz sounds immortalized by Miles Davis, Coltrane, and other modern masters, Big Sunflower plays the great American songbook, and then some. With Brazilian classics, infectious Latin rhythms, and danceable funk thrown in, your crowd will be pleased.
THE GROUP
The musicians of Big Sunflower have been performing together since around 2002. Though they typically appear as a quartet (saxophone, piano, bass, & drums), a guitarist, vocalist, or other instrument can be added for your event.
The group features saxophonist Chris Hagedorn, an energetic tenor player equally comfortable in traditional and modern contexts. His energy and bright, confident sound allow Big Sunflower to pierce fresh, new realms while remaining firmly rooted in critical jazz repertoire. A perpetual student as well as a professional teacher, Chris has lent his talents to jazz and rock groups around town.
Pianist Todd Bartholomay, who studied at Berklee College of Music, shares timeless melodies and provides solid harmonic grounding for the band. Full of genuine swing, Todd's playing provides hours of non-toxic fun for the whole family.
Big Sunflower bassist Steve Bulwicz draws upon his eclectic stylistic background, which includes work in various classical and popular genres. A native of the Garden State, Steve played with the founding members of Blondie in the 1970s before his career as a Navy pilot and subsequent affiliation with Big Sunflower.
Drummer Rick Nair enjoys the hybrid of jazz, Latin, and contemporary rhythms in Big Sunflower's material. He studied jazz with Ron Carter and Charli Persip in New York, where he was able to play with a wide array of musical artists before locating to Minnesota.
EVENTS
Big Sunflower plays weddings, fundraisers, holiday parties, community festivals, outdoor events, concerts for kids, fashion shows, and more. The band can shape its set and sound to suit your event and even plays requests!
