Patrick and his wife, Kristen, were very young when grief first struck. Kristen’s first pregnancy ended in an unexpected miscarriage. Sadly, they discovered that people don’t know how to talk about death and grief. In fact, their first painful lesson came when they met with Kristen’s doctor. She could not have been any less helpful. Her hurtful words rang in their 22-year-old ears.
That was a long time ago. Now, Patrick is Dignity and Spiritual Care Director at Parkview Health, a health system with over 14,000 coworkers and nine hospitals. His team has responded to over 12,000 patient deaths in Patrick's time there. Patrick also serves as the chairperson of the ethics committee. He is the author of three books:
How to Talk with Sick, Dying, and Grieving People
How to Find Meaning in Your Life Before it Ends
No Matter How Small: Understanding Miscarriage and Stillbirth (co-author with Kristen)
Although Patrick focuses on life’s most difficult topic—death—he’s not depressed! In fact, he enjoys life with Kristen and their four young adult children. If he’s not speaking, he can usually be found coaching his daughter’s flag football team, cheering for two of their sons at the rugby pitch, or racing another son in MarioKart.
Being so well acquainted with death makes Patrick want to live life to the fullest every day.
Book Patrick today to change the conversation around death, dying, and grief. Your people deserve it.
Author and Speaker Patrick Riecke makes grief conversations significantly easier for healthcare professionals and other leaders. After all, grieving people deserve to be treated right. Even experienced nurses, social workers, doctors, and others feel inadequate when their patient is dying, or families, coworkers, and patients grieve. Patrick’s audiences discover what not to say, replace those cliches with what to say, and actually enjoy talking about death, dying, and grief. Your audience will laugh, cry, and change their conversations about death and grief for the better.
