About

CRISOL, Spanish for melting pot, co-founded by Magdaliz Roura, is an ensemble that has been performing in Philadelphia and surrounding areas since 1997. This group is dedicated to the interpretation of a variety of folk and traditional musical genres from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, and other parts of Latin America.

Some of the styles Crisol performs include Bolero, Son, Cha-Cha, Mariachi music, Cumbia, Danza, Salsa, Rancheras, Huapangos, Merengue, Plena, Nueva Trova, Habaneras, Bossa Nova, and much more.

The band size varies based on budget, venue, and details of the event. There are several possible band configurations. We have performed as big as a septet and as small as a solo act, just let us know what you need and we will figure it out.

Our four most common configurations are:

1. Magdaliz and Her Trio Crisol: our most popular, with a typical instrumentation of Magdaliz
playing guitar and singing, small Latin percussion (maracas, clave, bell, bombo drum, etc.),
Conga drums, and violin.

2. Latin Trio: with a typical instrumentation of Magdaliz playing guitar and singing, percussion,
and violin.

3. Latin Duo: which includes Magdaliz playing guitar and singing, and either the violin or percussion.

4. Latin Solo: Magdaliz performing by herself, singing and playing her guitar.

* Disclaimer: Even though we play traditional Mariachi music, among many other styles, we do not stroll and we do not dress in "charro" costumes with the hats and boots. We do dress colorful and festive and, upon request, I can wear a traditional Mexican rebozo shawl.
