Liza Rose

About

Liza is a unique performing artist with a diverse movement background in physical disciplines including modern dance, martial arts, Commedia dell'Arte, yoga, and gymnastics. She spent her early career performing and studying dance in New York and L.A. with Deborah Hay, Jacques Heim, Juliette Mapp, Guido Tuveri, and many remarkable artists and colleagues at Dance New Amsterdam. She has trained on aerial apparatus with Elie Venezky, Elsie and Serenity Smith, Eric Newton, Joe Pinzon, and others.

She has worked nationally with Quixotic Fusion, Circus Nexus, Dream World Cirque, and as an understudy with the Tiger Lillies Circus. Since settling in Seattle in 2008, she has worked with Manifold Motion, the Aerialistas, the Atomic Bombshells, Lily Verlaine, the Seattle Erotic Art Festival, the Moisture Festival, avant cellist Zoe Keating, Mezzo Lunatico for Teatro ZinZanni, Can Can Productions, Dog and Pony Show Productions, and was invited to the prestigious Theatre Makers Residency at the Smoke Farm in 2011. Since 2009, she has performed primarily with her company ticktock, an experimental modern aerial circus and dance company whose mission is to bring contemporary dance to a vertical stage.

Liza loves the glitter and spectacle of traditional circus as well as the conceptual avant-garde aesthetic of contemporary cirque, and has looks and acts ranging across the spectrum. She performs on several aerial apparatuses, including static trapeze, aerial silk, rope, hoop, aerial hammock, and static cloud swing. She has also created acts on her own unique apparatus, including an aerial ship's anchor, an umbrella, a bathtub (and shower curtain rack), a canopy bed, and a picture frame. In the last year, she's been an aerial disco queen, a giant panda, a cupcake girl, a Flapper, a Siren of the deep, a member of the Lollipop Guild, and an Art Nouveau swan. She's also performed as a housewife, donned liquid silver high above an audience, performed alongside an avant-garde cellist, and cleaned a bathtub (in her own unique way!) onstage. Liza has long-running relationships with several festivals and organizations in Seattle. She curates the circus artists at the Seattle Erotic Art Festival, collaborating closely with the festival director to bring together performers and commission work that compliments the festival's theme each year. She has been invited to perform at the Moisture Festival, the world's largest Comedy and Variety festival, for 5 consecutive years. She regularly entertains at events with Dog and Pony Show Productions for clients such as Microsoft and Amazon. She enjoys the freedom and variety of creating work for each new festival or event, and bringing together her outrageously talented friends to collaborate with. She has a distinct personal style, marked by stunning grace, commanding strength, and delicate articulation in the air, but loves that her work can be so varied. She welcomes the opportunity to create something completely new with each job and tailor her work to each client's needs.

What to Expect

Typical Gig Duration: 5 - 180 minutes

She's also performed as a housewife, donned liquid silver high above an audience, performed alongside an avant-garde cellist, and cleaned a bathtub (in her own unique way!) onstage. And that's just to name a few of her appearances. She creates solo works, and also enjoys collaborating with an ensemble to make full-length shows, depending on what the event calls for. She has a distinct personal style, marked by stunning grace, commanding strength, and delicate articulation in the air, but loves that her work can be so varied. She loves to connect with her audience and engage them in fun, playful ways while performing.

Additional Notes:
Liza usually requires a minimum ceiling height of 15 feet and structural support to rig for aerial. Exposed beams are ideal. She does have a freestanding aerial rig that she can install for performances. It is 18 feet high and has a footprint of 12 feet by 16 feet.
