Why hire Joseph Gillis?
I perform classic and new covers from rock, folk, mountain and pop and have dozens of original songs. I will professionally deliver excellent vocals with guitar accompaniment for your event. If you prefer all cover songs, or all original songs, there will be no problems. All original songs have been road tested. Currently, my show consists of myself, a microphone, a hollow-body electric guitar and a public address system. Updated February 25, 2013 by Joe.
About
Primarily, I perform on electric guitar and sing covers and original music. The artists are listed in a setlist here on Gig Salad. I have many song choices from Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young and Guided By Voices. Mountain music by Hazel Dickens, Bill Munroe, and Doc Watson and dozens of others can be performed on tenor banjo or on the guitar. Folk music by John Prine, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt and Elizabeth Cotton and blues tunes by The Allman Brothers and Odetta are included in the setlist. Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton and Chris Isaacs are a few pop artists whose songs I cover. When you play hundreds of songs, its hard thinking of what to play, so I have a songbook with a couple hundred songs I perform best. I have a very powerful single PA speaker and mixing board that I use with a professional Shure microphone for vocals and perform on the guitar through a beautiful sounding Fender tube amp. This is your event. I want you to know what to expect. I also want to know what you'd prefer. I aspire to be unpretentious, so typically, I perform in street clothes. No hat, no tie, no makeup. I do not regularly dress to be the best-dressed person in the room, so typically, i do not try that when I am on stage. However, this being your event or at your venue, i can dress as well as you prefer and if I cannot wear something preferred, it will be made clear before being booked, so there are no surprises for you. I am not the boss if you hire me for your event. Well, I am the boss of me to the extent that i show up on time, perform my very best, and exit spotlessly, but booking me is not your taking on of another to do list. As a professional, you can count on me being part of the team making your event or the evening at your venue, a success in every way imaginable.
Influences
John Prine influences my stage presence as did the late Jerry Garcia. A good late friend influences my music often by having always asked "Why play it if you don't mean it". RIP Rick. Brian, a great friend influences me daily having asked so often of what ever song i am performing, "You love that song, don't you?" The first painting i ever painted brought out of me a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that influences my music always. My mother's love, and that of Jesus, influences me to be the best person I can be, which informs my professional demeanor.
What to Expect
Typical Gig Duration: 45 - 300 minutes
Without particular direction, individuals in attendance are treated to songs from the most popular artists that are well-known but which are not part of setlists being performed by most artists in most venues. An example would be Van Morrison. Brown Eyed Girl is part of so many setlists, but I choose to bring Into the Mystic and other classic Van Morrison songs instead. Audiences often dance and sometimes, you can hear a pin drop folk get to listening, and sometimes, the music is drowned out by roaring laughter or the applause of great news from the emcee. its all good. Please feel free to book Joe Gillis or contact Joe for more details.
Additional Notes:
I have my own public address sytem, I also have all the gear I need to perform, no renting or borrowing. I also have dependable transportation and I am a professional, which means I behave as a professional. I only need the little page lights I have for my lyrics and sheet music, so if you would prefer lighting, you'll have to either set it up or arrange it with me somehow, I am open. I only require one outlet, I only plug in an amp, a very small mixing board and the PA - all which goes through my entension cord. The PA is powerful, a 550 watt Behringer. I only use it for vocals.
Set/Song/Sequence List:
I perform over 115 covers and maybe 3 dozen originals. I will not perform an original if that is what you prefer, no problem at all.
