I play a mix of original songs and well-known covers from a range of genres, including folk, rock, country and blues. I pride myself on providing a fun, high-energy and positive atmosphere at all my shows. I especially like playing in out-of-the-way venues in the rural reaches of the Midwest, the sort of towns that rarely attract the attention of touring musicians. That's the sort of place I'm from, and that's the sort of place I'm most comfortable.
So a lot of us had returned to Ames to reunion and celebrate college years of doing theater at Iowa State. In the late 70's a bar and deli called Dugan's (formerly Westside Grocery owned by the Larson family) was our venue of choice because ... it was Dugan's. Forty years later, we still called it Dugan's and we ventured back into our venue of choice from so many years ago. Fred Love was on the stage singing to a bartender, what appeared to be a couple of off-duty bar employees and their boyfriends ... it was early ... 9pm. We quickly became friends when three of us walked in and started a verbal confront resulting in some Merle Haggard. We ordered a whiskey and immediately tipped the songster. Fred was great, he kept relevant music coming all night long as our group grew to about twenty. Did I mention they have beer! Fred engaged the audience with polite requests to drink a toast and sing along. Which we obliged. Late in his second set he sang a Niel Young song ... Ohio. Our group was elated. I went and asked him, being taken by Ohio's inclusion in his repertoire, why he sang that song, what did it mean to him? I was impressed that he knew about the incident so many years ago and understood its relevance for today. Rock on, Fred! Thanks for a great evening.
Response from Fred Love Singer/Songwriter:
Thanks so much for your kind words, Mark! I had a blast meeting you and the rest of your group. Check out fredlove.info to keep track of my upcoming gigs. And I'm glad you liked 'Ohio!'
