FundraiserI have seen Down 4 The Count perform several times and am always impressed. I'm not what you would call a music person, but I know what I like and D4TC never disappoints. The arrangements are fun and creative, the group seems to enjoy performing and has great chemistry, and the harmonies are fantastic. I love hearing the gasps of excitement from the audience as they finish a song. When I asked them to perform at a fundraiser I was coordinating, they were so easy to work with and were 100% professional. Many people came up to me after the event and expressed how much they enjoyed D4TC and asked where they could buy CDs. My only complaint was that the event was a casual wine tasting so people were talking and mingling while the group performed. Groups like D4TC were not meant to be background music - you will want to hear every bit of every song.

Club/NightclubDown 4 the Count is a primarily a capella quintet consisting of three women and two men that perform material that is arranged by members of the group. Frontwoman Colleen Keene's wide vocal range is best sampled in her arrangement of the standard "Whirlybird". Accompaning the vocalese written by Keene is a burning soprano sax solo performed by the group's alto, Penny Watson-Crumb. Another standard performed by the ensemble was "Bernie's Tune". A quick little arrangement by the remaining female vocalist, Francesca Delfin-Preponis, showcased not only her skills as an arranger but also the improv skills of a fellow member, Virgil Rosales. Rosales, being the newest member of the group, fits in like a pro in the more pop oriented songs like "I Feel Like Making Love". This tune was presented in the most interesting way, incorperating an electric guitar, a loop machine and audience participation. This arrangement was created by the remaining member of the group, Anreas Preponis. The group mixed up their set list with songs from their first CD (Down 4 the Count), award winning arrangements like "Hernando's Hide-a-way", as well as brand new arangements. The group created a fun environment and made some wonderful music.

Overview

About

Down 4 The Count is a vocal jazz ensemble based in Los Angeles. They have been singing and performing together since 2003, when the college vocal jazz class at their alma mater, California State University Northridge, was cancelled. The class was re-instated a few semesters after it was cancelled, due in large part to the enthusiasm for vocal jazz displayed by the students that went on to become Down 4 The Count. Colleen, Francesca, and Andreas are founding members of Down 4 The Count, and VJ and Penny joined in early 2009. By design or chance, all of the current members have attended California State University Long Beach, although they didn’t all meet there.

Although Down 4 The Count started as an a cappella ensemble, they have since added several arrangements that feature a rhythm section and/or other instruments. They have performed at several noteworthy jazz venues in the Los Angeles area, including the Jazz Bakery and Steamers Jazz Grill. Down 4 The Count is unique in that all ensemble members are proven arrangers; in fact, every track on their self-titled debut album was an original arrangement. Down 4 The Count’s future plans include a European tour in the summer of 2010 and recording a second album.
