Why hire Antonio Edwards Jr.?
For over 15 years, I have provided listeners with personal, powerful and entertaining poetry, adding my unique style and insight to social issues, our human legacy, and matters of faith. Focusing on performance poetry my spoken word pieces are charged with rhyme, rhythm, wordplay and verbal assaults that will not sit on paper.
Known as the people’s poet, Antonio was named Tacoma Washington’s Poet Laureate in 2009. He writes about his life experiences in ways which resonate with audiences of all ages, races and cultures. As Poet Laureate, historically awarded to literary poets, Antonio transcend the genre as one of the few spoken word artist to receive the prestigious title. Tacoma Weekly
About
Spoken word poetry affords me the opportunity to place a dual emphasis on my passion for writing and performing. The rhetorical and philosophical expression of my poetry is extremely effective in sharing with audiences not only what I am saying, but also in the manner which I choose to say it.
Through innumerable public school visits K-12, Universities, public workshops and partnerships with other arts organization I have become an influential voice and advocate for poetry and spoken word.
As a member of the Tacoma Arts Commission I helped to promote the arts as a vital tool for building communities by increasing exposure of a wide variety of art forms for the benefit of all its citizens.
My outreach project titled; Poetry in the 253 – Mouths & Mics is used as a vehicle to encourage young poets to use their literary voices and the language poetry provides as a highly organized form of self-expression and self–actualization. Life transformation has been the result as young people become custodians of the cultural, social and economic societies they choose to preserve through the written and spoken word.
An additional community outreach project include; “Recovery Poetic”, In which I teach how to use poetry and creative writing as a tool to help heal from the negative self-talk associated with the disease of addiction and other self esteem issues.

Typical Gig Duration: 30 - 240 minutes
Spoken word poetry is for the hearer and with a powerful voice I immediately engage audiences as soon as I am introduced. Often from where I am seated and before reaching the stage, I begin reciting familiar catchphrases that serve to peak interest and command attention throughout my original pieces. I express words purposefully by means of varying pitch, rate and volume to accentuate the delivery of the spoken word. The performance is further enhanced by using, stance, posture, gestures, movement, eye contact, and preparation specifically designed to connect with audiences and provide an overall entertaining poetic experience.
