Andrew Schulman (8-String-Guitar) is a guitar soloist and the founder and music director of the Abaca String Band, a string quintet. As a soloist he has appeared throughout the United States and Europe in venues ranging from Carnegie Recital Hall and The Improv in New York City to the Royal Albert Hall in London. Since 1977 he has had several steady engagements in landmark New York City venues including Windows On The World, The Palm Court at The Plaza Hotel, The Mark, and the InterContinental/The Barclay.
Mr. Schulman performed, as a soloist in 1997 and with the Abaca String Band in 1999, at The White House during the Clinton administration. He provided music for special events at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1991-2004, and has appeared at many other well-known institutions. The Abaca String Band has appeared on the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series from 1995-2005 and in concert in 35 states throughout the U.S.
After his life was saved at Beth Israel Medical Center in July 2009 he became a volunteer musician three days a week in the Surgical ICU there and in 2011 was appointed Resident Artist of the Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine. His work has received media attention: NY-1 New Yorker of the Week, an Emmy award for WNBC’s news story A Gift of Healing, and an in-depth interview on BBC-4’s “Soul Music: Bach” series.
He has recorded two solo CDs for the Centaur label, "The Baroque Style", and "Lullabies, Reveilles, (and Siesta!)", and his original music and arrangements are published by Berben Edizioni Musicali of Italy.
Andrew Schulman: Guitarist
I had the privilege and honor to have played several times for the legendary Spanish guitarist, Andres Segovia, and that had a great and positive influence on my career as a musician. Over the past three decades I've also had the opportunity to work with many excellent professional musicians in New York and elsewhere and that always makes an important difference.
What to Expect
Typical Gig Duration: 60 - 300 minutes
I play a wide ranging repertoire that delights the ear. I've been a professional musician in New York City since 1975, playing at many of the best know venues in the NY for a very demanding audience and I know how to present myself in a way that is worry free for the client and makes for a great event for the audience. I love my work.
Access to electrical outlet
Chair or bar stool
What I do is easy to arrange for. I bring my own sound equipment, a small but powerful Acoustic Image amplifier that can give just the right boost for a small party or fill a large area with a big crowd. The amp can also connect to a house system. Other than that I just need a chair or bar stool and I'm good to go. Lighting is up to the venue.
