A female impersonator or "drag queen" is usually a man who dresses as a female, often with exaggerated clothing and makeup, to perform or entertain as a hostess, stage artist or at an event. The term "drag queen" or "female impersonator" usually refers to people who dress in drag while performing, whether they're singing or lip-synching their songs, or are dancing or participating in events such as drag pageants, or at venues such as cabarets and nightclubs. The term "drag queen" originated in English slang in the early 1900s. Drag meant "clothes", and was also theatre slang for a woman's costume worn by a male actor. 'Queen' refers to the trait of 'royalty' found in many drag characters. The term "female impersonator", is still used, though it is sometimes inaccurate, as many contemporary drag performers are not attempting to pass as women.
