R&B is a pop music genre that began in the 1940s as rhythm and blues music. Early on, musicians recorded both jazz and R&B, such as the swing band of Count Basie, who had a weekly live R&B broadcast from Harlem. Other pioneers of R&B music, or soul music as it was dubbed, were Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, James Brown and Aretha Franklin. With the transition from soul to R&B in the 1980s, Luther Vandross, Prince and Whitney Houston rose in popularity. This newer contemporary R&B combined elements of soul, funk, dance, and hip hop. The abbreviation R&B is almost always used instead of the full rhythm and blues term, although contemporary R&B is also referred to as urban contemporary.
