R&B is a pop music genre that began in the 1940s as rhythm and blues music. With the transition from soul to R&B in the 1980s, Luther Vandross, Prince and Whitney Houston rose in popularity. This newer contemporary R&B combined elements of soul, funk, dance, and hip hop.
