Traditional music or Folk music can be easily identified with the grass roots working-class people who created it. The rise of folk music began with performers rooted in authentic American folk tradition like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. In the 1960s performers such as Joan Baez and Bob Dylan began writing "protest music" and had crossover hits that spoke to their generation. Other examples of this crossover are seen in bands who fused seeds of Folk and Rock and developed the incidental class of music known as folk rock, the most well known of which include The Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel and The Mamas and the Papas.
